Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A hairdresser from Florida turned floor trader-with-a-heart-of-gold is the idealistic heroine in this morality tale of shady deals, back-stabbing maneuvers and suicide in the Chicago commodities market. "This fast-paced melodrama . . . bristles with authentic details," noted PW.

From Library Journal

Commodities trading is a fast-paced, high-risk business with the potential for big payoffs to successful practitioners. Brashler's well-researched novel about a woman in the market does a good job of conveying the frenzied action in the "pit" at the Chicago Board of Trade, where a motley assortment of players wages huge sums based on market swings, hunches, and other seemingly unrelated bits of information. Scandals, big losses, and lots of erratic behavior enliven the plot, but the weak story line is not helped by too many implausible scenes that seem to have been inserted for the sake of sensationalism. Perhaps public libraries will want this, because the insider's view of the high-stakes commodities world will have wide audience appeal.
- Will Hepfer, SUNY at Buffalo Libs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Traders - marvellous, December 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Traders (Mass Market Paperback)
I bought this book in a thrift store in Chicago on my vacation from Germany. This book is very authentic as I can tell because I interned at the CBOT in summer 1999. A few things described are very fictious but on the other hand a lot views in this novel can and are definetely true. During my read I can say that people that are interested in all intrigues concerning the life of a trader and to-become-trader or co-worker at a commodity exchange sized like the CBOT will be very interested in this book. I believe it is very sad that it is out of print, so maybe someone will take care of this in the near future.

3.0 out of 5 stars Should have been a guy..., November 17, 2009
This review is from: Traders (Mass Market Paperback)
Placed in the fast lane world of commodities trading, TRADERS is, itself, fast paced. Brashler obviously knows this milieu. However, he does NOT present a believable voice for his heroine. I think he'd have done better to have the protagonist be a male.

Storyline is predictable: Intelligent, ambitious, but at heart, naive heroine learns what life is really all about in the world of big money. You can fill in the rest...

Not bad but nothing special either.
