Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Episcopal priest Chilton and Jewish rabbi Neusner cooperated on an earlier book, Judaism in the New Testament: Practices and Beliefs (Routledge, 1995), and cotaught a course at Bard College from 1994 to 1996 on Jewish-Christian relations. This work is the fruit of their enormous scholarship. The authors seek to refute the argument that Jewish and Christian history ran parallel during the early centuries of the Common Era, which was a crucial period of development for both religions. The authors argue that the two religions essentially switched roles: Christianity became public and political and Rabbinic Judaism became private and communal. There was great interaction between the two as they traded places in "politics, values, and teleology." Ultimately, both religions proved successful in the paths they followed. Densely packed with argument and ideas, this book would be most suitable as a college text for religious studies classes. (There is a companion volume of documents, Trading Places Sourcebook: Readings in the Intersecting Histories of Judaism and Christianity, which this reviewer did not see). It is a scholarly accomplishment that will open doors to understanding. Recommended for academic and large public libraries.?Paul Kaplan, Lake Villa Dist. Lib., Ill.
