Published in 1991 to accompany an exhibition of photos by W. Miles Wright at the Frank H. McClung Museum at the University of Tennessee, the text is supplied by noted historian William Ross "Sandy" McNabb, a McClung descendant. As was commonly the case in almost all U.S. locales, many outstanding buildings located in the central business district, adjacent to a growing university, and along a fashionable residential river front were indescriminately razed in the name of progress. But almost miraculously, many fine examples by nationally known architects such as John Russell Pope, George F. Barber, John F. Staub, and Harrie T. Lindeberg remain. Although most of the historic photos have been previously published and little new ground is covered, the book is a good example of documentation of local architecture that could serve as a guide for medium-sized cities nationwide.
