Editorial Reviews

Review

"Tradition and Traditions" has been hailed internationally as a classic, perhaps the classic, on the subject. Its presentation of the biblical, historical, and theological evidence for Catholic teaching on Tradition is as electrifying today as it was the day it exploded onto the scene. Those who object to Catholic teaching on Tradition will find their arguments shaken to their foundations and very likely toppled. -- From the foreword by Patrick Madrid

5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative and practical, October 12, 1999

This review is from: Tradition and Traditions: The Biblical, Historical, and Theological Evidence for Catholic Teaching on Tradition (Hardcover)
This work is a classic in the field of historical theology, in which the author recounts the history of "tradition," from scriptural, patristic and medieval sources, then attempts to find the common threads that run through Church history. Congar dispels many myths and superstitions about the Catholic conception of Tradtion. Unfortunately, this work and its conclusions are largely ignored by conservatives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yikes, Scooby! It's back in print!, June 17, 2000
This review is from: Tradition and Traditions: The Biblical, Historical, and Theological Evidence for Catholic Teaching on Tradition (Hardcover)
I would give this book 10 stars if I could. Not only does Congar present his thesis with great expertise, he covers ALL the bases in regards to tradition, scripture, and the Church just as the subtitle says. He's done his homework, now do yours! Protestants beware!

This will not be a quick read, however. You'll need to take some time to chew on this one. Other books which you may want to look at include: "Not by Scripture Alone" by Sungenis, "By What Authority?" by Shea, "Eucharist" by Bouyer, "the Christian Tradition" in 5 volumes by Jaraslov Pelikan, "Common Ground" by Bajis, "The Vindication of Tradition" by Pelikan, and "The Orthodox Way" by Bishop Kallistos Ware.
