3.0 out of 5 stars Just okay
I was expecting a book that described in detail the evolution of traditional american tattoo design. Instead it is just a published sketchbook of tattoos. I was hoping for symbolism, Sailor Jerry's inspirations, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars For tattoo history lovers, January 31, 2011
This review is from: Traditional American Tattoo Design: Where It Came from and Its Evolution (Paperback)
Sailor Jerry Swallow has now been tattooing over 50 years. In that time he has amassed a collection of drawings, sketches, and correspondences from tattooers around the globe. In the old days, tattooers didn't have access to copy machines, fax machines and the like. If you wanted to share a great new design with a friend in another state or country you drew a sketch of it and mailed it to them. Sometimes a customer would come in with a cool tattoo and you would sketch it directly off of their skin.

This book is a collection of sketches of classic tattoo designs along with notes about their origins and meanings. It is not a book filled with text of tattoo history. If you love classic tattoo flash, this book is for you.
