Artistic Arabesques, June 5, 2008
This review is from: Traditional Arabic Music (Audio CD)
I was very pleasantly surprised to find this CD. Appearantly, Arabesques is one of those ensembles that specializes in performing (and adapting) traditional musics from across the Middle East and North Africa. Featuring masterful playing on the violin, ney, darbuka, bendir and of course the 'oud, this CD offers a strong taste of Middle Eastern music. The artists display a great deal of sensitivity and insight into the modal nature of Arabic music. From the driving pulse of 'Cerga,' to the improvisational 'Taksim Hussayni,' to the Moroccan-tinged sound of 'Sidi Blal,' this CD does not disappoint. It provides a very nice showcase of the music of the Arabic world. The percussion is especially nice, particularly on tracks like the lively 'Alwan Mizan' and the almost Indian sounding 'Hiwar,' where we get an excellent interplay between darbouka and ney. Fans of Middle Eastern classical and folk musics will probably get the most out of this album, but it may be of some interest to students of bellydance as well, particularly those who want something a little more authentic sounding. Admittedly, if you were to walk down the streets of Casablanca, Cairo, Damascus, Beirut or Dubai today you'd probably hear more Arabic pop music. Still, this CD is an excellent taste of the Arabic sounds of the Middle East and North Africa. I strongly recommend it. It is quite an enjoyable CD.

an all-time favorite, April 1, 2009
This review is from: Traditional Arabic Music (Audio CD)
My wife's aunt gave her a cassette tape recording of this album when she was twelve (in 1992). It was always one of her favorite recordings. We listened to that cassette all the time after we were married, but unfortunately the tape got lost along the way somewhere. I am so happy that 1) I found this again and 2)it is still available! It's hard to believe. The previous reviewer sounds like an expert who can really vouch for the quality and authenticity of this recording--but from someone who knows only what they like, I can say it is wonderfully full of life, emotion, power, sensitivity and fun. If you're at all interested in Arabic music, I think this is one to have.
