pretty but impractical,

Please see the images above: I thought it would be useful for you to get an idea what the designs look like. As with the majority of Dover books, the low cost makes it haphazard how valuable you'll find a given book. As part of the Design Library, these motifs are authentic and well-researched...and they're fun to look at...except what do you do with them? As the back cover says: "These patterns can be used as is, rearranged, combined, enlarged or reduced." Okay...but these are just line drawings with no color suggestions. I suggest if you want to see similar patterns, look up Traditional Chinese Designs Iron-on Transfer Patterns (Dover Iron-On Transfer Patterns) by Barbara Christopher in the Dover Needlework Series. Similar designs but the color plates make all the difference in the world.

good for the quick and dirty,

a good basic mongage of Chinese designs, but they are pretty limited, and mostly standard. they seem almost 'clip art'. my advice would be to study Chinese art history, learn the motifs and themes, and the way they presented things, and then create your own. but for the quick and dirty approach, this book isn't bad.

It was just what I expected. It is a thin booklet (8 1/2 x 11) with a lot of chinese patterns in it. I wanted to scrapbook my pictures from our trips to China. The booklet is entirely done in black and white. I suppose it depends on what you want to use it for, but I am very happy with it.
