More About the Author

DON WARRENER BIO
Don Warrener began his karate training March 15th 1966 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada under Benny Allen who also taught Wally Slocki, Teddy Martin and Tony Faceti.

He was promoted to shodan (1st degree black belt) in 1968 by Benny Allen and the legendary Richard Kim of San Francisco California. He won the Canadian Championship in 1968 and in 1971 won the Eastern Canadian Championships. In 1973 he broke the "Guiness World Book of Records" record for brick breaking when he broke 3744 bricks in 4 hours and 40 minutes.

In 1978 he was introduced by his then sensei, Richard Kim to Gogen "The Cat" Yamaguichi who asked him to represent the Goju Kai in Canada but he refused as his loyalty remained with Richard Kim. Although he did return to Tokyo on several occasions for training at the dojo of the "The Cat".

During the late 1970's he started the "Voice Of The Martial Arts Magazine" and "Masters Publictaion" now run by Annette Hellingrath. He also started to develop a system of teaching large numbers of students and school marketing which eventually developed into over 9000 students by the late 1980's and opened over 32 professional schools all in Canada and selling 105 franchises. He in fact was the first person in the world to teach martial arts business seminars .

In 1985 he began the lengthy process of restoring a national monument and with the aid of his students restored the historic Hamilton Custom House (20,000 sq. feet) which was originally built by Queen Victoria. He was presented with the Heritage Award of Canada in 1991 for his efforts and contributions by the Federal Government. The building was scheduled to become a college for martial arts instructors but due to circumstances beyond his control it was eventually turned over to the Provincial Government as a museum which it is today.

In 1993 he was asked to become the vice president of the World Karate Organization and eventually held the largest International tournament ever in Canada with over 27 countries and 1200 participants over 700 Black Belts alone.

He has written well over 300 articles for virtually every magazine in the world including Italy, Germany, India, Australia, USA, Sweden etc. He has also written seven books in total and co-authored another six.

In 1997 he started to compete again and won the European and Pan American Championships in both forms and weapons forms in the Masters Division of the WKO.

Then in 1998 he made a radical move and moved to sunny California where he presently runs Rising Sun Productions with his partner Isaac Florentine a well known martial artist and Hollywood action film director. Their library is now over 900 titles and they were responsible for the release of Elvis Presleys pet karate project "The New Gladiators" and "The Life and Legend of Bob Wall". They undoubtedly have the largest collection of unseen historical martial arts footage in the world including names like Kano, Funakoshi, Elvis Presley, and Bruce Lee.

Mr. Warrener is also the liason for Jean Claude Van Damme to the martial arts world.

He continues to teach seminars around the world and for his senior studenst in Canada Phil McColl, Conroy Copeland, Tosha Lord, Tom Burtnik, David Turkowski, Christina Magliocco, Dirk Gerlof and Vic Granic. In England for friends Jon Jepson and Jim Wilson and in Brazil for Antonio Flavia Testa and Marco Fierra.

His books include:
"Full Contact Martial Arts" 1975
"Advanced Full Contact Martial Arts" 1977
"Traditional Goju Ryu Karate" 1982
"Advanced Traditional Goju Ryu Karate" 1985
"The 20th Century Samurai Life Richard Biggie Kim" 2007
"A Man Who Knew No Fear Peter Urban" 2008
"The Masters Speak" 2008
"The World Sokeship Council" 2008.
"The Kata of Business" 2009
"The Goju Ryu Dictionary" 2009
"Gogen The Cat Yamaguchi- The Emperour of the Crimson Fist" 2009
"Bushi Chojun Miyagi" 2010

He was promoted to 8th dan by the Father of Canadian Karate Masami Tsuruoka in 2008.

4.0 out of 5 stars No-nonsense Affordable guide to Goju Ryu Karate Do, February 2, 2003
By
C. J. Hardman (San Diego, CA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Traditional Goju Ryu Karate (Paperback)
Author Don Warrener's first book specifically about Goju Ryu Karate-do focuses mainly upon kata. Illustrated are the five basic kata (forms) unique to Gogen Yamaguchi's line of Goju-Ryu Karate-do (Taikyoku 1-5), as well as the first 10 kata found in all traditional Goju Ryu schools: Gekisai Dai Ichi, Gekisai Dai Ni, Sanchin, Tensho, Saifa, Seiunchin, Sanseirui, Shisochin, Seisan, and Seipai. This takes the practitioner to about the 2nd or 3rd dan black belt level, depending upon your school of practice. Some of Warrener's kata renditions differ somewhat from those of "orthodox" Goju schools--for instance, the ending on Saifa shown in this book includes a technique I haven't seen practiced by other Yamaguchi-line students (see page 144). Nevertheless, I appreciate the fact that this volume doesn't try to drown the reader in basic drill after basic drill to the point of monotony and questionable usefullness.

Includes a chapter on Goju Ryu Karate founder Miyagi Chojun's tenents of Goju Ryu, and a section on history describing the development of Goju from Miyagi's early days with Master Higashionna to Yamaguchi's study of Goju which commenced during Miyagi's trip to Japan, and basic techniques (basics coverage is minimal--this volume assumes the student is receiving some sort of person-to-person instruction). There is even a photo of Warrener with Gogen Yamaguchi, and famed Canadian Sifu Frank Lee.

While this volume in my opinion doesn't approach the technical detail of Morio Higaonna's precise four volume "Traditional Karate-Do: Okinawan Goju Ryu" (I haven't found any books on Karate which have!), it is the most inclusive of the lower-priced guides on this style. Warrener's succeeding book, "Advanced Traditional Goju Ryu Karate" follows up where this one leaves off. Warrener was a well-known kata and kumite competitor during the 1960's and '70s. He originally learned Goju Ryu Karate from Bob Dalgleish, and later advanced under the guidance of karate men such as Richard Kim and Morio Higaonna.

1.0 out of 5 stars A book that every Goju Blackbelt should know ...., April 28, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Traditional Goju Ryu Karate (Paperback)
This is a book that I show to all my blackbelts, a must read book. This is a book I show them of what "not to do". I am sure if you are a traditional Goju Ryu, you will find the basics and katas are full of mistakes and faults. I used this book to ask my students taking blackbelt test of "Tell me what is wrong with this Sanchin Kata"? The very fundamental concept of elbow never leaves the body is not even followed. Looking at the Sanchin kata, as a Goju practitioner, I am embarrassed. Don't waste your money on this book, or the second volume. Spend it on a solid Goju Master like Morio Higaonna instead. If you learn your form from this book, you are NOT learning Goju.
