5.0 out of 5 stars Traditional Island Knitting book
Excellent service,
Description said "used and may have signs of wear", not so! It arrived in perfect condition, looks very clean and unused and arrived in good time.
Beautiful book,I am thoroughly enjoying using the patterns and will probably do so for years!
Thank you so much

3.0 out of 5 stars Dated and somewhat disappointing
I found this book a bit disappointing. It was written in 1988, and my primary complaint is that all the designs seems dated to me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dated and somewhat disappointing, October 25, 2009
This review is from: Traditional Island Knitting: A Classic Collection of Unique Hand-Knitted Designs (Paperback)
I found this book a bit disappointing. It was written in 1988, and my primary complaint is that all the designs seems dated to me.

The book is divided into several sections: Channel Island knitting, Aran knitting, Shetland lace knitting, Fair Isle knitting, and Falkland Islands knitting. The patterns are not charted but written out line by line.

The first sections, Channel island knitting, is one of the best in the book. The patterns are not particularly striking, but they are more classic than most in the book.

I am a huge Aran buff and checked out the book hoping to find good Aran patterns. In the Aran section, I did find my favorite book, "Aran jersey with raglan sleeves." It's a striking yet simple pattern shown knitted beautifully in tweed yarn. The other patterns are not particularly original, and I wouldn't want to make the time investment to knit them.

The Shetland lace section has a couple of unspectacular sweaters, but also includes a rather dramatic shawl.

The color combinations in the next section, Fair Island knitting, for me ranged from OK to cringe-worthy. I think in this section the 80s dating of the book is rather obvious. I've become accustomed to the beautiful patterns in Starmore's and others' books, and these simply don't measure up.

One of the Icelandic patterns are interesting and rather unusual, but I don't find it attractive enough to knit up.

Overall, this book is OK to flip through, but there are books out there with better patterns (in my opinion) in each of the types of knitting covered, from Aran to lace to Fair Island (not sure about Icelandic).
