Product Description

From the Manufacturer

For nearly forty years, we’ve been passionate about connecting people with plants and passing along the centuries-old wisdom of how to use them. So even though our packaging has changed, our aspirations remain the same: help you use plants to be healthy. Same great teas, same old us: devoted stewards of traditional herbal knowledge, practitioners of sustainable sourcing, meticulous judges of highest quality herbs, caring members of our communities, proud employee-owners of our independent company, herb nerds, and plant people who, without meaning to sound too hippie about it, feel like the plants are talking to us. We hope you will enjoy the fruits (or flowers, roots and leaves) of our labor.

Product Description

Personality: Smooth and silky. Herbal Power: Helps you sing it loud, say it proud, stand up and be heard. Reason to Love: Slippery elm or Ulmus rubra (Latin for "red elm," so called for its lovely reddish bark) is a beautiful, native North American elm tree. It’s the inner bark of this tree that is actually called "slippery elm" due to its, yes, slippery, smooth, and slimy-in-a-good-way properties. Combined with licorice and marshmallow root, we think this tea blend is like taking your voice to the spa--because we all need a little comfort sometimes so we can get back to being our best. Taste: Sweet and earthy, silky, with a distinct licorice taste. The statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best remedy I've ever found for a sore throat! December 6, 2007
I damaged my vocal cords when I was a kid, so I lose my voice often and I am also prone to getting a sore throat VERY often . A friend of mine recommended this tea to me about four years ago and it is incredible!

It tastes delicious. I usually let the tea bag steep for 10 or 15 minutes to develop the full flavor. It is soothing and really does "coat" your throat so it doesn't burn or scratch or hurt. It is almost like a natural organic anesthetic. I highly recommend it to anyone with a sore throat. Try it once, and you will be a fan for life.

This stuff works really well. I'm not a big homeopathic remedy person, but Throat Coat relieves my sore through for a decent amount of time and tastes pretty good. I much prefer to drink in combination with saltwater gargling and using a neti pot, than to use menthol cough drops. Breathing in the steam also relieves pain and congestion in the throat, nose and sinuses. I found it about 7 yrs ago and have been using it ever since.

Note: you need to follow the instructions on the box for steep time to get the full effect. It requires a long steep in boiling water (I think it's 10-15 minutes). I use a very large mug covered with a lid for this so that when it's done steeping, it's still hot and it lasts a while.

This tea, plus ungodly amounts of honey, got me through a few really intensive months of rehearsing and performing -- I'm a classical singer, and sometimes my schedule is absolutely crazy! I was toting around a nalgene full of Throat Coat and honey at all times last spring, and it was a godsend.

Throat Coat is soothing and slightly sweet, and does exactly what it's supposed to. As with a lot of herbal concoctions, though, the aroma can be kind of funky at first! It's definitely redolent of black licorice (true licorice haters ought to stay away), and the taste takes a little getting used to. By my third or fourth cup, I wasn't bothered by it anymore.

If you're a classical singer, a singer of any sort, or just have a really sore throat, I'd say give it a try. With lots of honey. Mm.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five stars just for the taste
This does help soothe a soar throat, but you may have to steep two bags in a single cup. Don't use too much water, either. Six ounces should be the maximum per drink. Read more
