This would be the book I'd recommend to anyone first interested in the subject and to those who have been attuned. It is a loving treatment of the subject that sticks closely to the subject, and unlike other books on Reiki, comes with no baggage or axes to grind...just information of Reiki, its healing power, and the application of this power. This book has the best mental preparation for the student, by example, for the loving healing power of Reiki. Highly recommended.

Reiki Master, Amy Rowland, takes you step by step through Level I and II classes. She discusses the history behind this ancient healing method, and detailed hand positions are clearly shown through pictures as well as text. The section on practical human anatomy is excellent and goes a long way in relaying what ailments are helped by each hand position. This book serves as an extensive practice manual for students. The author even discusses how to establish a professional practice, so TRADITIONAL REIKI FOR OUR TIMES is also compelling reading for anyone who might consider teaching this wonderful healing art. Anyone who is interested in Reiki must own this book!

From the first paragraph I was drawn into this book. Having just become a first degree practitioner, I felt an amazing sense of gratitude for the special gift that I have been allowed to share. While the way my master taught me is somewhat different from what was described, respect for differing approaches was embedded within the writing. A great deal of information was presented with an accepting attitude for differences. The true spirit and love of Reiki was apparent.

This book is wonderful - absolutely wonderful. I discovered Amy's book in 1999. It is what inspired me to become a Reiki Master/Teacher. I read it from cover to cover as soon as I bought it. Her down-to-Earth writing style keeps you engaged, and she easily explains Reiki, and how it can help you in your own life.

Amy has done it! I am currently writing a doctoral dissertation on reiki and this is the best reiki recource book I have found! As a reiki practitioner, it is evident that her stories add depth and help paint the true picture of the art of reiki. Thank you for this wonderful reference. It is the most comprehensive reiki book on the market today.

After receiving my Reiki I attunement, I wanted very much to find a book that cleared up a few remaining questions and also to give me a more comprehensive background on Reiki. I picked up this book but soon found the "traditional" in the title to be a little misleading.

The information on Reiki's origins is very much the standard myth that was first spread by Hawayo Takata when Reiki was first taught in the United States. It has since been debunked by modern Reiki practitioners who traveled to Japan to get the real story.

Overall, I found Amy Rowland's book to contain not much more information than you'd get from your average Reiki I class. This may not mean anything regarding Ms. Rowland as a Reiki teacher, but if you're looking for a more in-depth overview of Reiki's history, practice and spirit, I would recommend "The Spirit of Reiki," by three of the foremost Western Reiki teachers. It also contains many very useful Japanese Reiki techniques.
