5.0 out of 5 stars Very good book at a very good price
I was surprised at how good this book was and at such a low price. I especially liked its big format and layout of course as the other reviewer says it doesn't have all the information but so far I haven't seen one knitting book that does. And that is the reason we buy so many books. It has 11 chapters, Chapter 1 origins of knitting in Scandinavia, 2nd Types of knitting...

This review is from: Traditional Scandinavian Knitting (Dover Knitting, Crochet, Tatting, Lace) (Paperback)
I was surprised at how good this book was and at such a low price. I especially liked its big format and layout of course as the other reviewer says it doesn't have all the information but so far I haven't seen one knitting book that does. And that is the reason we buy so many books. It has 11 chapters, Chapter 1 origins of knitting in Scandinavia, 2nd Types of knitting traditionally used in Scandinavia, 3rd Knitting techniques from Scandinavia, 4th Norwegian Knitting, 5th Swedish knitting, 6th Danish knitting, 7th The North Atlantic islands Faeroe and Iceland, 8th Jerseys, 9th Gloves and mittens, 10th Stockings, 11th Caps. There is also a glossary of English and Scandinavian knitting terms, Knitting needle sizes, further reading and an index. It has a few pages of colored photographs of traditional Scandinavian sweaters, caps, and samples of colorwork. It has also more pictures in black and white. So I would recommend this book very highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars The original and best, October 17, 2004

This is a book that had been out of print. I think it the best of all texts on Scandinavian knitting. It has history, examples and patterns for the thinking knitter. It is not a glossy basic knitting book, but a reference test of how to design your own, and how to appreciate the beauty of Scandinavian knitting.

3.0 out of 5 stars good information, but not complete, January 22, 2005
This review is from: Traditional Scandinavian Knitting (Dover Knitting, Crochet, Tatting, Lace) (Paperback)
This book would be excellent for someone who is looking to read a history of scandinavian knitting, but slightly less useful for someone who is looking to knit authentic tranditional scandinavian designs. While this book offers excellent information on scandinavian knitting, it often has just slightly less information than I would like to see. There are not enough pictures of knitted objects to get an idea of the range of items that were made in different places/times, and often there are not pictures of the original object to go with charted designs. Or, in some cases, the charted designs don't match the sample orignal object that is pictured. It has many colorwork charts, but they are scattered throughout the book, so it is sometimes difficult to find what you are looking for. I was not as impressed with this book as I was with her book on Fair Isle knitting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Traditional Scandinavian Knitting, October 11, 2006
This review is from: Traditional Scandinavian Knitting (Dover Knitting, Crochet, Tatting, Lace) (Paperback)
WOW! This is a great book. I just bought it after reading bits and pieces of it from a copy I borrowed from our library. It has Scandinavian, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, and North Atlantic Islands (Facroe and Iceland). It has patterns for Jerseys, Gloves and Mittens, Stockings, and Caps. It also has a number of stitch patterns to use in your project. It's a wonderful book to add to your knitting collection.

I think if you are looking for scandinavian charts you need to buy this book. It's a great price and although it's mostly in black and white, you are getting tons of charts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tons of Charts, January 24, 2007
This review is from: Traditional Scandinavian Knitting (Dover Knitting, Crochet, Tatting, Lace) (Paperback)
If you're looking for charts for really cool colorwork this is your book. There's some history in here too...I give it four stars because I wish the book were longer. I wanted to read more and more. Absolutely awesome.

Even if you never knit one of these patterns they are so wonderful you can spend a lot of time just drooling over the pictures. My non knitting friends even enjoyed looking at this one!

4.0 out of 5 stars North Country History & Knitting... good combo, January 7, 2008
This review is from: Traditional Scandinavian Knitting (Dover Knitting, Crochet, Tatting, Lace) (Paperback)
I'm always a sucker for a good, historical take on anything, but especially knitting. Learning WHO invented WHAT stitch pattern WHEN... Plus, really clear patterns & instruction.

The author is definitely a "right handed" or "English" knitter; she is gleeful over being able to do tvaandstikning by holding & twisting the yarn in her right hand, while stating that those who use both hands, won't get the right fabric.

Everyone is allotted one form of snobbery, right?!

This is a great book for those who already know how to knit to a formula. Mine is Elizabeth Zimmerman's. Plug in the patterns one has chosen from Trad Scandinavian Knitting, & you have just designed your own, beautiful, sweater.

Go for it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Scandinavian Knitting, February 5, 2011

This review is from: Traditional Scandinavian Knitting (Dover Knitting, Crochet, Tatting, Lace) (Paperback)
Lately I've been curious about knitting and about Scandinavian history, so I've been simultaneously reading this book and The Vikings by Robert Ferguson. I've enjoyed both, but there's a lot of information to be digested! I love that the knitting motifs and patterns are classified into separate chapters about Danish, Norwegian, and others. Loads of fascinating historical details have been compiled for the reader's pleasure. Since I am a knitting novice, I do not get all the charts and graphs, and I know that I need to practice before I can attempt some of the complicated but beautiful patterns included.

I've already started a pair of socks using ideas gained from this book. It's an excellent reference book with many interesting historical details included. A "must have" for any serious knitter/designer's library!
