Book Description

September 1996 Canongate
This is a reissue of a book of recipes for dyeing wools. Scotland has a tradition of famous tweeds and tartans and is renowned throughout the world for the manufacture of cloth. In the past, dyeing methods were jealously guarded secrets handed down by word of mouth from one generation to the next. Jean Fraser, in this practical guide, has gathered together many of the old recipes before they become lost to us, though there has been a resurgence of interest in natural dyes in recent years. The collection of recipes is gathered from both local and scholarly sources, and is recommended for costume historians, as well as for dyers. This new edition includes a list of addresses of people who practise natural dyeing. It contains instructions for every stage of the dyeing process: how to choose a plant giving a suitable colour; how to recognize the plants; and when to pick them.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good book, useful for medievalists!, July 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Traditional Scottish Dyes (Canongate) (Paperback)
A modern book with information that can be used for period dyeing (for medievalists) in Irish and Scottish styles. It recommends thoroughly modern mordants (dye color fixatives) though there is some reference to ammonia (period by way of urine) and alum (which may or may not have been early period, but, was at least medieval). It discusses various native and imported plants, traditional ways to dye with them, and how to get specific color variations. Includes bits of folklore about the plants and dyes, regional customs, etc.

I found this an interesting and informative book. However, a few recipes did not seem as effective as the author described them.
