Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-These two attractive series entries introduce readers to the traditions of the two most populated countries in the world. The geography of each country is presented in the opening chapters, along with an overview of its cultural groups. Both books discuss the extensive emigration that has carried these traditions well beyond national borders. Separate sections describe food and cooking, clothes and costume, music and dance, religion and festivals, and leisure entertainment. Suggested activities, such as making a traditional food or decoration, are included in boxed sidebars; some projects require adult assistance. Large full-color photographs carry as much information as the relatively simple texts. They feature happy people engaged in interesting-looking activities. Simple maps show the country's location in the world as well as regions and places mentioned in the texts. Both titles include a traditional story retold in a somewhat pedestrian manner: "The Monkey King" in China and an episode from The Mahabharata in India. Each volume concludes with a glossary of oddly chosen words and a relatively up-to-date list of books for further information.

'These attractively presented books will ... make effective additions to the school library. Good use is made of photography; every page is illustrated with the text often overprinted on to a stunning whole page image ... a set for the library would make a valuable resource.' -- Somerset Children's Book Review No. 30 'These attractively presented books will ... make effective additions to the school library. This review is from: Traditions from India (Cultural Journeys) (Library Binding)
This book is mislabelled. It should be Traditions from South Asia. The book is filled with traditions and pictures from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lank. Very little is covered about India.

Please dont buy this book if you want to know about Indian Traditions.

A Big ZERO Star for the book. An F- Grade for the paper.
