It's hard to argue with the song selection and the CDs are a good length as well.

This samples from everything Traffic recorded up until 1974 including a few live cuts ("Gimme Some Loving"). If you like the band, all areas of that time period are included including some of the lengthier album songs. It's hard to argue with the song selection and the CDs are a good length as well.
One note: the 1994 reunion of Steve Winwood and Jim Capaldi is not included. A number of these Gold releases exclude the more recent material and focus on the older songs and that is the case here.

Gold is the best representation of the best of Traffic out there. It has everything you could ever want from Traffic. I mean really this covers their whole carear. From 'Dear Mr. Fantasy' to 'The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys.'

'Rock And Roll Stew' 'Rain Maker' 'Dealer' there all here. Traffics hard rock edge, their drug induced psycadelia, their amazing folk rock, I.E. 'John Barlie Corn Must Die.' The masterfull musician ship of Steve Winnwood is presented here perfectly.

So while most best ofs are terrible, and mainly these Gold collections are really bad this one is one that everybody should have in their collection!

There are quite a few Traffic greatest hits/best of collections out there. They can be useful for turning new fans on who aren't really familiar with the band or artist if they're put together well. This one covers the most ground and has the best sound quality. Don't bother with the other "hits" cds.

A great all-round selection of Traffic's music. All but 3 of the first album tracks are there and a generous selection from other albums. And it's remastered, and as with all "Gold" releases, the tracks are in chronological order with info on the particular albums they came from.

Greatest Hits albums are really great though when they include rare tracks previously only available as singles - it's a pity the wonderful "Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush" wasn't included here. You have to buy the first album remaster to get that, and consequently double up on 8 tracks.

I've been listening to Traffic since '67 and have owned every concoction that's been released over the years, including the Winwood box set, but this release beats them all. I've had several of the Gold series, and they've been servable greatest compilations, but for whatever reason, this item rises above the average. The mixes are extremely clear and am able to actually understand many of Winwood's vocals that I've always had trouble understanding. The discs offer a nice balance of cuts from Dear Mr. Fantasy thru When The Eagle Flies. The only disc that gets shorted is Last Exit which I understand was a record company compilation. The discs each clock in at 80 min! OMG! Someone finally used the entire disc lengths. Plus, there is a thick booklet with pics, detailed track listings, and an informative essay in which I actually learned things I didn't already know. Instead of going on about the Summer of Love, the essayist chronicles the many incarnations of the band. Buy with confidence. I saw the one negative review about manufacturing defects but that can happen on any release.

I had heard the usual "hit" tracks by Traffic over the years/decades, but I wanted to wade in deeper and get a better feel for the band's overall sound. This excellent 2-CD collection did the trick. The songs on here show the wide range of material that this band played, from R&B influenced tunes and uptempo rock to more jazz influenced pieces. Traffic was a group of truly outstanding musicians; Steve Winwood and Dave Mason, plus drummer Jim Capaldi and the others. I guess with the personalities involved --- and the urge by Winwood and Mason to persue solo careers --- it was inevitable that they would split up, but they left behind some truly memorable music, some of the best of the early 70s. This double disc set is attractively priced and loaded with tunes; a perfect introduction to the mesmerizing music of Traffic.

I have been a fan of Traffic and Steve Winwood and Dave Mason for a long time and have been looking for this collection for a while. Its everything you could want from Traffic and then some. A good "sister disc" for Steve Winwood fans is the double cd live at Madison Square Garden with Eric Clapton.

At last count - I numbered way over 50 artists across Universal's vast catalogue given the 2CD "Gold" treatment (sometimes also known as a "Definitive Edition"). But with the artwork for these digitally remastered two-disc retrospective sets being so uninspiring and uninformative (a track list on the rear with bugger all else by way of detail) - many simply go unnoticed - languishing around in digital warehouses unwashed and unloved. But that isn't to say there isn't a deal for a buyer to be had...

Amidst their hidden gems - STEPPENWOLF and THE CRUSADERS are two "Gold" editions that jump to mind (I've reviewed and raved about both - amazing content as well as quality remastered sound). Well here comes another - the TRAFFIC instalment. As you can see from the detailed lists below - you get great choices (and lots of them) and best of all (only credited on the inside booklet) - superb ELLEN FITTON mastering. Fitton is a name I've sung the praises of before - she mastered all of the extraordinary "Complete Tamla Motown Singles" book collections (75 discs across 14 volumes, 1847 tracks) and has also had a hand in large swaths of Hip-O Select reissues. Her work here is the same. So here are the smiling phases, paper suns and high-heeled boys with low sparks...

Released September 2005 - "Gold" on Universal/Island 0602498312070 (Barcode 602498312070) breaks down as follows:

Disc 1 (79:49 minutes):
1. Paper Sun
2. Dealer
3. Coloured Rain
4. Hole In My Shoe
5. No Face, No Name, No Number
6. Heaven Is In Your Mind
7. Smiling Phases
8. Dear Mr. Fantasy
Tracks 1 to 8 are from their debut album "Mr.
