I hope you enjoy this soundtrack, March 12, 2004
This review is from: Traffic: The Miniseries (Original Soundtrack from the USA Network Miniseries) (Audio CD)
This was a wonderful experience for me to work on: great directors and producers, and a really great film. Far above most work done for television. While this score taps the world of ambient electronica, as did the score to the film version of Traffic (which I worked on with Cliff Martinez), this music goes further into realms of rhythm, vocalaas, strings, pulse and world music. It is in many ways a more ambitious soundtrack. I hope you'll give this a listen. (p.s. - I had to give a star rating to submit this!)

More Superb work from Rona, January 12, 2008
This review is from: Traffic: The Miniseries (Original Soundtrack from the USA Network Miniseries) (Audio CD)
Jeff Rona has to be one of the most diverse composers in Hollywood. He has a wonderful sound to his music, mixing traditional scoring, with electronics and loops. He has a classical background (as a flute player), can write for and conduct an orchestra, and at the same time is really into electronics and synthesizers, but doesn't get lazy with them. Plus, he's quite possibly the most connected composer working in Hollywood today; he's worked on many, many scores and soundtracks by others (with his name in the background of "additional music by"), and had numerous people work with him in his studio. His Rolodex of fellow musicians, composers, performers, producers, directors, music supervisors, etc. must be one of the thickest in the industry.
I should also note that while this music is similar to the score from the movie by Cliff Martinez (a score which Rona worked on as well), it's not just a repeat of that. It has it's own compositions in a similar vein.
What makes this CD so strong is that while it's mostly electronic based, Jeff isn't just someone who plugs a bunch of loops into Garage Band and calls it a day, it's well thought out, and worthy of several listens. He has such a strong pulse on technology and changing of styles in music, the music sounds not like a flash of mimicking what's current, but well planned out and original. His vast knowledge of music (composition, arranging, and electronics) is sort of like the glue that keeps a large mix of styles perfectly together to where it's both cool sounding, and well written music.
Although impossible to find, Rona's music to Exit Wounds (with assistance from Hip-Hop producer Grease) is similar for those looking for more. Samples can be found on Jeff's website.
