About the Author

Leonard Evans is a Principal Research Scientist at General Motors Corporation. He has a B.Sc. degree in Physics (First Class Honours) from the Queen's University of Belfast, Northern Ireland, and a D.Phil. degree in Physics from Oxford University, England. Dr. Evans' 130 publications appear in 37 different technical journals, and cover such diverse subjects as physics, mathematics, traffic engineering, transportation energy, human factors, trauma analysis and traffic safety. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine, a Fellow of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and a Fellow of the Society of Automotive Engineers, a Vice-President of the International Association for Accident and Traffic Medicine, and Past-President of the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine. In 1991 his widely acclaimed book Traffic Safety and the Driver was published (reprinted in 1996, 1998). Dr. Evans has received major awards from the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine, the International Association for Accident and Traffic Medicine, the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
