The benefit of 50 years perspective has been well used by the author. He weaves careful attention to detail with his trademark storytelling of the human experience - bringing the day alive from the perspective of the combatants. A true and compelling tribute equal to the courage, sacrifices - and mistakes - made that day.

An excellently written account of the lead up to and the battles of dieppe.
A tragically mismanaged preparation led to one of the bloodiest battles in Canadian military history.
A true and lasting shame that so many brave men had to lay down their lives But the account shines throughout with stories of heroism and bravery on a small scale. Not the stuff of legends but rather the small scale acts of courage and comraderie that truly matter on the battlefield.

As always Mark Zuehlke's books are a well written combination of historic accounts and insight.

Dieppe is not a subject given much written word, so one could probably write what would amount to drivel about it, and still find a receptive audience. This book is so much more than that. Concisely written, and yet filled with enough personal accounts to keep it from being a `dry` read, this book gives an in depth look at a battle which remains to many an unknown footnote in the greater scope of the Second World War. Read this, and you will not be sorry.

Mark Zueklke continues to turn out excellent researched books that makes you feel you were there .You begin to feel for the individual as they experience combat for the first time,.War is certainly not glorified .i have read countless accounts of Dieppe non of which point to the leader who bears responsibility .The author leaves no doubt that there is plenty of shame to bear but leaves no doubt Mountbatten bear the responsibility.
