More About the Author

Visit www.TragedyInSedona.com for links to over 120 witness statements, photos, references, Press & Media links, and blog covering the book and current trial of State of AZ vs James Arthur Ray.

Raised in a very religious Roman Catholic family, Connie had a paradigm shift as an adult that put her on a lifelong path as a student of spirituality. She has belonged to several spiritual groups, including leading a Sylvia Browne study group, and was trained as a Practitioner of Hypnosis with emphasis in past life regression. After watching the movie The Secret, Connie attended her first James Arthur Ray seminar in January of 2007 with her husband Richard. Over the next three years, they participated in or volunteered at 27 James Arthur Ray seminars and events.

A detailed list of events can be seen on www.TragedyInSedona.com

In preparation for a trip to Peru with a group led by Ray, Connie lost 80 lbs which she credits in part to what she learned from James and her goal of being in better physical shape before going to Peru.

Connie and her husband Richard are among the few people who were members of the World Wealth Society (WWS), Ray's inner circle, from its inception. They attended every event that he offered as either participants or volunteers. Connie has a unique insight into how his organization was run and has developed friendships with Ray's employees, other members of the WWS and participants in his events. She was trained in activities such as fire walking, breaking a board with your hand, and rebar bending using your throat, and coached participants through those activities at his events.

Connie has a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Santa Clara, and an A.A.S in Medical Laboratory Technology & Electron Microscopy. She has worked as a medical laboratory technician, chemical engineer, and a large computer systems sales person. Currently she and her husband are real estate brokers and own The Joys of Real Estate which operates under Keller Williams Realty. Connie resides in San Diego, CA, with her husband Richard and daughter, Erica.

I was one of the "originals" on James Journey of Power, beginning in August 2001, when the Journey had just been conceived. Like Connie, I went to all his events, (tho not in so short a time frame as she and Richard), and also "Dream Teamed" a number of events. I implored my husband to try just one event, as he thought I was perhaps getting into a cult from hearing about some of the activities we did. He went and was convinced that it was worthy of his time and money also. James is a Master Teacher, and we learned so much from him, and the other participants became like a family to us also. We still maintain ties with quite a number of people we met in this way. But at the time the WWS (World Wealth Society) was introduced, we decided that we could not spend that kind of money, and that James was heading in the wrong direction. My husband and I attended Spiritual Warrior in November/Dec 2007, at the time I was turning 61. It was a good experience overall, but there were warning signs then. One girl we were physically close to in the sweat lodge clearly had a hard time, and could not get out of the lodge on her own. My husband and another physician worked with her, and later sent a message to James, warning that he needed to have medical personnel specifically stationed for this kind of problem. I also got to know Connie at this event, as she was in my "Warrior Group", a small group which met periodically during the week to do assignments and talk about the material.
Connie's book is well written, honest, and thoughtful. She makes no sensational judgments or condemnations that cannot be substantiated by many others of us who attended. It was interesting to me to see the progression of events after we left.

I was truly amazed by Connie's journey. Even though this journey was with James Ray, the book is mostly about one woman's journey to find herself and prove to herself that she could face her demons and change her life.

Of course I was interested in the "James Ray" connection, but the book is so gripping and personal that I found that he became a bit player within Connie's story. Connie wrote an amazing story. It took a lot of courage to write this book, as she seems to be an ordinary person who came upon what she thought was a person who would lead her into enlightenment, only to find out in the end it is all within her to change herself.

I highly recommend this book. Perhaps by reading it you too can change your life and outlook without needing to line the pockets of yet another wonderful guru.

Thanks for your courage in writing this book Connie.

Settle in for a ride through the world of James Ray alongside Connie Joy. Connie brings you into his world, the highs, the lows, the wondrous and the horrendous. Journey with her through her quest for personal growth via Ray, his seminars and teachings. Experience through Connie her journey that started with such high hopes and expectations that led to confusion, to frustration then disappointment and finally to tragedy. Be prepared to meet the "emperor" James Ray and then experience the unraveling of trust and faith in a leader that eventually led to questioning, "Does the emperor have no clothes?" then the discovery of the definitive answer. There is much to consider when reading Connie's book. There is much to experience. Go to Egypt and then, later, Machu Picchu. The trips will be exhilarating and worth your time investment. Remind yourself while reading that this is a nonfiction book. Connie's truth is definitely stranger (and more compelling) than fiction.

If you want to get more insight in what lead all these people to enter the sweat lodge with James Ray, this is the book to read. Connie does a great job describing what went on in the world of James Ray. She was part of his "inner circle" and describes what that was like. You will also learn more about what his student went through, as Connie is very open about her own experiences and describes her own sweat lodge experience just two years earlier in great detail. I could not put it down and highly recommend it.

Connie Joy stepped forward and told her story which speaks for many as it exposes the abuse, delusions, exploitive tactics, corruption, dishonesty, and vainglorious world of James Arthur Ray which his students endured while he had their trust. Connie had the integrity to tell people the truth of what the world of James Arthur Ray is truly like, and the book is an excellent personal experience shared which warns all of us not to trust the "Guru".

To quote something from another review by "Zephram", the fatuous statement of " Nothing will convince these brainwashed Christians that the Bible is not to be blindly believed to be infallible and inerrant" is typical of the brainwashing James Arthur Ray has induced upon YOU. You gotta be kidding me, with that statement, right??? You can read all the James Ray books you want, but I tell you, he's a done deal, buddy. I think it's time for you to find another Guru. Try Bob Proctor...and you'll probably notice in his books, the same words James uses...cuz that's where James stole some of his work from. That's common knowledge to people who believe *the truth*...get with it, will ya???

As far as your admiration for James's other books, like Practical Spirituality which you boasted about, I suggest you start researching Jame's background...you will find most of his works are stolen from others, his credentials are fake, he is NOT a Shaman, he did NOT study all those years in Peru....need I go on? I believe it is correct to say here that from your view, Nothing will convince these brainwashed Guru-lovers who so blindly follow the words of men with no foundation, blindly believed to be infallible and inerrant.

You DO know that 3 people DIED, right? Oh yes....you commented it was their fault....
