1.0 out of 5 stars Not good
I read this this book based on the reviews from this site. It's now my opinion that a lot of these reviews have been placed by family and friends attempting to boost its rating.

The poor, clumsy writing skills of the author made it very difficult to get through. Don't waste your time with this one.

Author. Rozetta Mowery's Tragedy In Tin Can Holler True story

This amazing book about this back woods country, poor family from Athens, Tn. The horror they faced, physical abuse of their mother and death of their mother, is horrifying!! I coulnd't put it down. The Author Rozetta really put the story into such place with such great detail and feeling, I truly never felt so emotional reading a book in my life. Its amazing to me that this woman came out so smart and polished and loving.. I love how the story teaches you no matter how much hurt and abuse you can endure you can still come out of it with such love and strength, Rozetta's life is a true example of that.. Great book, this family could be any american family, teaches you behind every door no one truly knows what goes on.. Rich or poor!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Journey Into One Woman's Past Bravely Shared With The Rest Of Us, June 29, 2011
This book takes the reader on an emotional journey as one woman recounts her past as well as the past of her ancestors. She bravely shares her story with readers in the hopes of giving them the courage to face and overcome their own history of abuse. This story very clearly reveals how "The sins of the father are visited on the sons...." and shows how the cycle of abuse can and must be broken. Kudos to the author for her bravery and her willingness to share such personal details and for her work to end domestic violence! Well Done!

This review is from: Tragedy in Tin Can Holler (Hardcover)
Rozella has exhibited great courage by confronting her family history. This had to be very painful, but enlightening as she understood the patterns in her life. I can't say this is a "good" book, but it is a very interesting read and I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true story of how evil is passed on until someone says enough, June 21, 2007
The story within the pages of this book is best summed up by the title. "Tragedy in Tin Can Holler" is just that... The author does an amazing job of retelling the facts of a long and brutal trail of violence and abuse over several generations. The list of issues raised by the book are as relevant today in any community as they were in Tin Can Holler. One can't read this book and not be moved from horror to tears and then to joy, knowing that there is hope, if only someone cares enough to stand up and say no to evil.

5.0 out of 5 stars will change your perspective, June 11, 2007

I read the book from cover to cover as soon as I got my copy. I cannot describe how this book reaches out and grabs your heart, and it doesn't let go even after you finish reading it.

This is the kind of book that you lay in bed thinking about before you drift off to sleep. I grew up in a home with domestic violence, but I can't begin to imagine some of the horrors that Ms. Mowery and her siblings lived through.

Bless you Rosie!! Keep up the great work you are doing for so many others!

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't Put It Down, June 10, 2007
By
I found "Tragedy In Tin Can Holler" to be the most captivating true story I have every read. As I started the book I was immediately intrigued and could not put it down until I finished. Ms. Mowery, the author, writes with such detail you can almost see the events as they unfold. Besides being a good read, it made me realize how abuse and neglect can lead to generational dysfunction and that Ms. Mowery was one of the lucky ones to have escaped and courageously wrote this book to help others. I would recommend it to males and females alike. It is really an eye opener.

5.0 out of 5 stars ITS NOT ABOUT STYLE OR GRAMMAR, ITS ABOUT HEART, August 4, 2010
This review is from: Tragedy in Tin Can Holler (Hardcover)
I have a lot of respect and admiration for this author. No, Ms. Mowery is not an academic writer. The continued existence of the social problems described in the book today suggests that we need more writers like Ms. Mowery that are REAL and DOWN-TO-EARTH to tell the story to reach victimized men, women and children. I certainly could identify with the children and families in the book. I want to thank Ms. Mowery for her courage and the love and care with which she told the story. It gets directly to the point - domestic violence, child abuse, incest and survival. So many people do not understand that even though some members in families may have done horrendous things, they are still apart of who the child or the survivor is and are still loved. Indivudals who have experienced this form of abuse spend a lot of time wishing the abuser would get better, blaming themselves for being the problem and wanting their lives to turn into a "normal" Waltons family. For me the focus of the story is not the murders or the abuse but the courage it took to live and survive, as well as the generational transmission of the unhealthy behaviors and forms of coping -- good or bad. That to survive and live fully it is necessary to address the past, deal with its realities, accept the past for what it is, learn and grow from it. I found Ms. Mowery's tale truly inspirational and I was very moved with the way she lovingly and understandingly told the story. No finger pointing, no blame game, just reality and how to grow from it, make changes for the better.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR EVERY SAFE HOME FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE, October 27, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book should be put into every safe home for women that have suffered through abuse by their husband or boyfriend . It is a eye opener and if it would save just one women from living a life of hell through no fault of her own , it would be worth the time and money to purchase this book and place it where women could read and maybe relate .Even though we live in a age now that helps women through this type of abuse and we feel that being as if this took place many years ago , that this couldn't happen in today's world , it does take place in today's time. It took courage for this author to write this book to try and help our world stamp out the the abuse of women and children .She wrote it...it is up to us to end this violence but making our voices heard . If you think or suspect you know of someone who is suffering from domestic violence, speak up and give your help and support . I myself lived through abuse for 13 years...How I wish someone would have reached out to me at that time. But at that time during the 60..their were no laws to protect any of us or places for us to be safe. Thank you Rozetta !

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down, August 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The best book I have ever read!!! I absolutely could not put it down. My advise to anyone preparing to read it is do not start it if you have to work the following day. I found my self so wrapped up in this book that I was still reading at 2am! The title may be "Tragedy In Tin Can Holler", but I also found it to be a story of persaverance and determination, not to even mention courage. And to anyone who may be wondering, I am neither related to nor have I ever met Rozetta Mowery! Am I trying to boost this books ratings? Absolutely, the better the ratings, the more likely one is to purchase. And in my opinion this is one book that should be read by many people!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put it Down-Terrific Summer Read!!, July 12, 2011
This review is from: Tragedy in Tin Can Holler (Hardcover)
This tale is shocking at every turn ... you think your family is dysfunctional? Read this book and it will quickly change your mind. It is bravely written and exposes generations of family and community kept secrets. I've recommended it to everyone I know. It's a page turner that you just can't put down. Once you get over the initial shock of the subject matter, you're left with a strong message about the cycle of violence that can be passed down generation to generation.
