5.0 out of 5 stars Using it to study for the massage therapy national exam, September 17, 2006
I bought this book to help me better locate and memerize the bones and muscles as I prepare for the national massage therapy exam. Although I have yet to take it, i'm finding the Trail Guide to be extremely helpful as I study. With a fill-in-the-blank setup it forces me to really think about the answers (although they are in the back!). As a result, I am hopefull about being able to pass my exam. I'll be sure to update and let you know the result!

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for massage therapists., January 5, 2009
By J. Ball (Trenton, TX United States) - See all my reviews
My daughter and sister are taking massage therapy classes in different states with different schools. Both agree that this is the book they use the most and will keep for a reference. If you can find the coordinating flash cards they recommend getting them also. They are a great study aid.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes Known As The Armpit, December 23, 2008
By SunTiger "of SunTiger MOJO" (Greater Seattle Area) - See all my reviews
This book: "Trail Guide To The Body" (Second Edition) remains the best muscle study guide I've ever come across. It's one of the very few text books from massage school that I still reference on a regular basis.

It was written and illustrated by two Licensed Massage Therapists: Andrew Biel and Robin Dorn, respectively.

To accompany Dorn's hand-drawn black and white depictions of bones, muscles and bodily systems, Biel writes anatomical details in mostly lay terminology. If you know the basic planes of movement (coronal, sagittal, transverse) then you can easily navigate your way through the Trail Guide with no problem at all.

Here's a quick example, of Biel's writing as he describes a significant but small muscle on the anterior shoulder called "Coracobrachialis."

"The coracobrachialis is a small, tubular muscle located in the axilla. Sometimes known as the "armpit" muscle, is a secondary flexor and adductor of the shoulder."

The illustrations and text that accompany each muscle group gives the student confidence in feeling his/her way through this hands-on learning manual.
