4.0 out of 5 stars Hamlin Garland's dad, June 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book wasn't what I thought it was going to be. Garland used a very thin cover of fiction to describe his dad's early life through his later life. As the reader discovers the Graham family, it becomes clear it is really the Garland family. I found that to be distracting. The story did give quite a bit of background for Garland's more famous "A Son of the Middle Boarder" and "A Daughter of the Middle Boarder." I liked the book, but I probably won't ever re-read it.

I HAVE heard Richard Graham say that his earliest memories were the sounds of his mother's voice and the whirr of her spinning-wheel, mingled with the jocund sound of the mountain brook which ran just before the farm-house door. Read the first page
