I thought this book was excellent. I read it a few years ago after reading the first book, "Black Sand and Gold". Having spent 13 winters (and counting) in Interior Alaska (where it often hits 40-below or colder), I could appreciate the author's descriptions of her family's day-to-day struggle to survive in this harsh land.I'm not sure where the "Reader from Japan" saw "lots of swearin'"--I don't recall any.

I recently found the first book by this author at a local antique store. It was an amazing true story! When I reached the end, I learned that there was a sequel. I was so excited to have found it via amazon.com. I immediately dove into it and (sadly) have only about 20 pages left to read. What an amazing account of what life was like from 1897 - 1904 in the Klondike area during the Great Gold Rush. I live in Alaska, so I understand many of the challenges described, but am truly in awe of how they lived through them. The account is quite detailed (in both books). I would highly recommend reading these books. I've really enjoyed learning about this topic and seeing the pictures provided. Note: In a search on the Internet, I learned that the author died in 1977 ... she was the first white child born in the Klondike.
