"On The Trail" is one of the best books for trailing/tracking dogs that I have read so far. Ms. Tweedie has covered every aspect of Bloodhound work thoroughly. She has also explained clearly, the non-dog aspects of police and SAR work. Topics such as keeping records, what you will encounter on a mission, what to have in a pack, the search team, etc. I liked the attention to detail and explanations, such as "Wash each harness one at a time so that you always have dry gear on hand." The book is loaded with practical tips. The type of tips and details that the new handler needs to know and the seasoned handler takes for granted. I also enjoyed the candid discussion of the politics that a SAR dog handler can encounter. It covers sensitive topics in an unbiased manner that does not "preach" to the reader. Ms. Tweedie gave the seasoned handler gentle reminders about some of the ruts they get into, as well as how they should help the new handler. All aspects of selecting, owning and training a Bloodhound are covered in this book. The training methods are clear, sound and easy to follow. I was also impressed with the genuine love that Jan Tweedie has for her Bloodhounds. Although she did not come right out and say it, the way she talked about her dogs showed it. This is a book from the heart. A must have for tracking dog owners.

This is an excellent training book for beginners and advanced people! What a terrific opportunity for people to go step by step in the world of search and rescue. This book will help to save lives!!!

Jan Twedie's book is the most comprehensive and thorough document available on the techniques of mantrailing. The advice given is very valuable to those who have the stamina and courage to train and work mantrailing bloodhounds. Highly recommended.

I felt that this book is an excellent addition to anyone who is involved with K9's The authour did an excellent job of researching the material for the book. The book takes you step by step in training a K9 to be used in Search and rescue I would and have recommended this book to my others who are involved with search units

Jan Tweedie has a very practical approach to training the trailing dog in language and examples that are easy to understand and put to use. One of the best books I own (in my ever expanding library about scent and scent dogs) regarding training a trailing dog and general information about search dogs. A real gem!

This is my first review and I can say that this book is a must have for any tracking dogs. I met Jan in the early 1980's. Everything I know about bloodhounds and tracking I learned from Jan. Jan truely loves her dogs and it shows in this book. I reread my copy often and still today I am reminded of things I had forgotten.

If you are interested in tracking, or about the bloodhound breed, this book is a MUST HAVE.
