Gr 4-6-This pictorial account of a family trip following Lewis and Clark's trail from the point at which Sacagawea joined the expedition is a slip of a book in spite of its visual beauty. Its strengths are Lourie's superb color photographs and a spacious and thoughtful graphic design. Lourie hoped to learn more about Sacagawea and the Indian point of view about her and the expedition. The information resulting from these efforts is, however, sketchy and superficial. Descriptions of his experience on present-day reservations are at times uncomfortably adulatory. Allusions to the historical record can be confusing, as when the author says, "The Nez Perce might easily have wiped out the expedition-but fortunately they chose not to attack," inferring hostility. This is followed by "-the Nez Perce greeted the expedition with curiosity and generosity." Elsewhere he states that Clark's name carved into sandstone on the Yellowstone River is "the only physical evidence of the expedition." Yet there are a few of the Jefferson medallions given to Indian leaders by Lewis and Clark still in existence. Lourie's lovely photographic record of his family's journey speaks more eloquently to the nature and depth of their experience than does his writing. Thus, the book might serve as a way to engage visually oriented children, but Judith St. George's Sacagawea (Putnam, 1997) and Rhoda Blumberg's The Incredible Journey of Lewis and Clark (Morrow, 1995) are better introductions to the topic.-Nancy Collins-Warner, Neill Public Library, Pullman, WA

An excellent book for kids!,

This review is from: On the Trail of Sacagawea (Lewis & Clark Expedition) (Hardcover)
My two daughters loved seeing the author's children included in this adventure. Lourie's photographs are amazing. They depict the wild terrain, the rivers and the mountains, that Sacagawea covered with Lewis and Clark in 1805-1806 on their way to the Pacific. From this book, I learned details about the expedition I had not known before. It's a great introduction to Sacagawea and the monumental feat accomplished by the Corps of Discovery. After reading ON THE TRAIL OF SACAGAWEA, I will keep my eyes out for other books by author Peter Lourie.

Another masterpiece!,

This review is from: On the Trail of Sacagawea (Lewis & Clark Expedition) (Hardcover)
...Reading Mr. Lourie's books truly brings history to life, and adds present day perspective to the tales they've read in their social studies books. In this book particularly, my children were able to relate to the Lourie's children, on a family vacation, traveling such an historic route. How lucky those children are to have a father who can bring to life the stories of Sacagawea, and how lucky are we that he writes it all down for us to share! My young neighbor brought the book to school and her teacher used it as she taught about Sacagawea. Our whole family is anxious to read about Mr. Lourie's next journey!!

Good reading for parents -- not kids,

This review is from: On the Trail of Sacagawea (Paperback)
This isn't a great book for kids. It is the travel journal of a family who traveled in Sacagawea's footsteps along the route of the expedition. It's got family photos and everything. The best photos in the book were of the reconstructed Fort Mandan and a Mandan earth lodge. We always find petroglyphs to be disappointing, and this book seemed to share that conclusion. Not a very useful book for homeschoolers. Instead, read "Going Along with Lewis and Clark" by Barbara Fifer.
