Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9-A thorough account of the history of the Cherokee Nation's conflicts with white colonizers of its tribal lands; the U.S. government's removal of the people from their ancestral homes in 1838; and their forced migration West to Oklahoma. The text is sparingly, but appropriately, illustrated with full-color and black-and-white reproductions and photographs. Solid and useful appendixes are included. Alex W. Bealer's Only the Names Remain (Little, 1972) is beautifully illustrated and has a clear, easy-to-read text, but Brill's title provides better coverage. R. Conrad Stein's The Story of the Trail of Tears (Childrens, 1985) places more emphasis on the discovery of gold on Cherokee lands; howewer, the illustrations are inferior. Trail of Tears is a handsome volume that is a fine addition to literature on the subject.
