Mini-Saga of a Determined Frontier Husband-and-Wife!,
By
This review is from: The Trail of Whitened Skulls (Leisure Western) (Mass Market Paperback)
Though advertised as a collection of short stories dealing with easygoing, fast-drawing Cole Lavery, the five stories contained in TRAIL OF WHITENED SKULLS is, in fact, the saga of Cole and his wife Marta as they meet and journey across the Wild West, headed for land in California.
Cole and Marta first cross paths on board an ill-fated riverboat in 'River Raiders,' become a couple in 'Commission Man,' undergo various adventures heading to California in 'Wagon Boss' and 'Trail of Whitened Skulls' before facing a final challenge once they get to California in 'The Curse of San Stefan.' While the book's cover emphasizes only the Cole Lavery character, Marta receives equal play in the stories and is one feisty, determined lady. The stories are well-done and fairly fast-paced. 'The Curse of San Stefan,' in particular, speeds by a little too fast. In any case, Blackburn's book is a good read; interesting characters combined with believeable action. Recommended. |
