Book Description

July 1991 0832304859 978-0832304859 1st
These were World War II Ski Troopers of the 10th Mountain Division on maneuvers in the Gore Range of the Colorado Rockies. Dusenbery draws from his own experiences as he describes the rigorous mountain training at 9,000 to 12,000 foot elevations. The D. Series maneuvers were the culmination of high mountain training for the Division. Its veterans still talk about D. Series as being a truly memorable experience.

Within a few weeks, while still at Camp Hale in Colorado, Dusenbery wrote his account of the ordeal. His graphic narrative forms the basis for this book. At the same time, Wilson P. Ware was recording his experiences by drawing twenty-two sketches. The narrative has been skillfully linked with the extraordinary sketches in a vivid account of man's struggles against the sudden storms, numbing cold and fierce winds in the high mountains.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The universal appeal here is Dusenbery writing of his military experience from a common-man, citizen-soldier's point of view." -- C. W. Buchholtz, Rocky Mountain News

From the Back Cover

These two men, the author and the illustrator, from opposite sides of the United States served in the same battalion without knowing each other as they went through the harsh ordeal of D. Series in the high Colorado Rockies. They thought their experiences memorable and soon after recorded them. Harris Dusenbery in writing and Wilson Ware in sketches, now for the first time united in this book.

This review is from: Ski the High Trail -- World War II Ski Troopers In the High Colorado Rockies (Paperback)
This author lives in my home town. His books are out of print now and I happy to find both of them on Amazon.
Mr. Dusenberry was active in the ski patrol and he autographed both of his books for me. I always check on Amazon BEFORE I do any research for any books. Somehow they seem to always have one listed. Thank you, Amazon.
