5.0 out of 5 stars One of the few great western artists...the best., April 10, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Traildust: Cowboys, Cattle, and Country, the Art of James Reynolds (Hardcover)
I have recently viewed and read the newest book by James Reynolds. There are just a few of the great western artists painting today with the attention given to the detail of that period. Great book Mr. Reynolds. I've always been a fan of yours...and enjoy reading, looking, and re-reading and re-looking at your art. Thanks...Norman D. Catlett

5.0 out of 5 stars A Significant Book, December 18, 2008
This review is from: Traildust: Cowboys, Cattle, and Country, the Art of James Reynolds (Hardcover)
Amazon's description of this hard-to-find book is a bit misleading.

This is a book about the art of James Reynolds and the text by Don Hedgpeth is not "stories." Hedgpeth provides explication of the subject matter of the paintings and exploration of the Western realities behind the paintings -- the lives and lifestyles of the cowboys.

At any rate, this is a beautiful book. Large format, almost square, pictorial cloth over hardback boards with a dustcover. 155 pp, all of them with color illustrations.

Reynolds, a "painter's painter" provides a "fusion of Western images that art lovers called a combination of Frederic Remington and Charles Russell," images that are "magnificent, lonely, proud, and poignant." Indeed, it is difficult to imagine a painter of cowboys more effective than Reynolds. He yields a canvas that is loaded with historical detail while simultaneously capturing the moods of the relationships between man, beast, and landscape.

5.0 out of 5 stars The art of James Reynolds, August 19, 2010
The Art of James Reynolds: We've owned this book for several years and it never fails to please me when I open the pages to look at the paintings and read about the work. It is beautiful, touching, historic and first rate art. Some of the paintings are peaceful and sensitive while others are exciting and stir the soul the way music can. My husband and I love this book and have a few of Jim Reynolds' beautiful artist's proofs and one original framed in our study. I wouldn't give them up for anything. They remind me of my childhood growing up on a ranch in California. I probably won't own horses again or watch a cattle drive, but I can clearly recall some of my best memories when I look at the paintings in this book. James Reynold's art is fine art. It can't be limited to the category of Cowboy or Western art. His talent was the kind of talent only a few artists have had. I'm sorry he's gone now because we will miss seeing new paintings of his. We can enjoy the paintings in this book and his last book which is called "The Landscapes of James Reynolds". If you haven't seen his work you are in for a treat. I hope more of his books will be printed soon and for now hopefully you can find a used one in good condition at Amazon. It's a treasure worth owning.
