Great guide book to Western Idaho!,
This review is from: Trails of Western Idaho: Expanded and Updated Third Edition (Paperback)
Margaret Fuller is an exceptional writer that combines how to get to some of the best locations in Idaho with a little history of the areas you might explore. I own all of her guidebooks and would recommend them to anyone. One of my favorite pieces of information that she includes is how long a hike will take which makes it nice since I can plan better. Being a native Idahoan growing up in Salmon I knew a lot of Eastern & Central Idaho's backcountry but when I moved to the Treasure Valley I didn't know the area. That was easily remedied when I picked up this book. It got me to some beautiful out of the way places. It is filled with a lot of great information and bits of lore that might take a lifetime to find out on your own.

Margaret tends to ramble, not to the point,

The good: This book will get you to some really great hikes in Idaho. I like that she tells approximate hike time and elevation gain and loss.
The Bad: Margaret tends to ramble on about things that aren't relevant to the hike at all. I do like that she gives a lot of detail about the history of the area, but it should be separated. She lumps everything together which makes it difficult to find exactly in her description where the hike starts. She will tell you about trails that fork off the main trail instead of just saying "take the right fork". I don't care where the left fork goes if it isn't relevant to the hike. She should have separated the descriptions into parts. First directions to the trail head. Then a brief description of the hike. Then the hike itself. I also wish she would have included in each hike whether it was a good destination for backpacking, IE: are there good tents sites around the area. Her directions to the trail head are confusing at best. Instead of giving you a reference point to start from she says, Turn right on Forest rd 384. She should start with for example, From Idaho City on highway 21, drive 18 miles north and turn right on Forest rd 384(Edna Creek Camp Ground) Not that you can't find the trail head, but you should always start with a point of reference. Her maps should have a key of TH on them designating the trail head start point to make it easy to find. Margaret's books are definitely a good addition to your hiking library to find some of the best destinations in Idaho. Worth the purchase.
