4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for the beginning cross country skier
This is an excellent book for the beginning cross country skier. The author gives a good overview of classic track skiing, skating, and backcountry skiing. I would not recommend it for somebody who has XC skied for more than one or two years. For those who would like to begin and have no idea where to start, this is the book for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Looking Book
This is a great looking book on cross-country skiing. Color photos and superb layout. It is one of the nicest books for beginner and novice skiers.

Better skiers are going to find it weak on technical content with most of the explainations taking a certain artistic licence at the expense of accuracy. Two books advanced skiers should look into are "Tao of...

I recently started Cross country skiing and I purchased this book. I found it very helpful and informative. Anyone just starting cross country skiing should buy it. It has many great pictures and diagrams that help in learning different techniques.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good basic, November 27, 2000

This book begs to be picked up. The photos are beautiful. Why 3 stars? Because there are simply too many errors in the actual ski techniques to get you past novice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reading, pictures and good information, March 19, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: A Trailside Guide: Cross-Country Skiing (Trailside Guides) (Paperback)
I am just taking up cross-country off-trail skiing and got a few books on it at the library. This one was my favorite by far so I purchased a copy at Amazon. It gives very detailed instructions with pictures and diagrams to make it very understandable. Besides telling you how to ski and about gear and other practical matters, it is a pleasure to read - sprinkled with humor and anecdotes - and has great pictures. It has kept me inspired to get out on my new skis even though the snow has not cooperated in the western U.S. this winter.

Great book. Beautiful color photos, great historical stories that give an enjoyable perspective on XC skiing. The technique and equipment are also reviewed.
