4.0 out of 5 stars "TRAIL OF TREACHERY", April 29, 2011
By
This review is from: Trailsman, The (Giant) (Paperback)

1860
Colorado Territory
Following the trail of the conquistadores
several 100s of years later

This Trailsman Giant edition concerns the subjects of Hernando (Hernan) Cortes (1485-1547), and later, Francisco de Coronado (1510-1554), 'expeditions' against the Aztecs. The story stretches back over time for at least 300 years from the 1860 visit of Skye Fargo to Colorado Territory.

Using an 1860 time frame to look backward the trails of both Cortes and Coronado lead a contemporary story through Colorado, New Mexico and Kansas. The mainstay for this is a supposed modern day (1860) archaeological expedition led by a contemporary (1860) Aztec princess (Solita Chiltec) with hopes of collecting artifacts for an unnamed museum. As the back of the book states this is a: Trail of Treachery.

There is always danger in researching items from the past and no less so in this novel. Murderous people of greed, hostile Comanches, and natural disasters from fires and earthquakes all play their part in this expansive, Giant edition of the Trailsman. It is also a 'giant', expanded book but with very little padding in the text.

A very well written, highly interesting book which recaps within its plot some of the travail the Spanish priests and conquistadores brought to the Aztec people. Revisiting such items as Pueblos, Zuni Indians, the 'golden' city of Cibola, The Seven Cities, and others brings an eerie edge to this excellent novel.

One of the more enjoyable Trailsman books in the series which I've read.

Semper Fi.

Note: typographic error or page 177. Skye is commenting on the Comanche Indians to say: "But I doubt that. It's not the Comanche way. Sioux, Cheyenne, or Crow, maybe, but not Cheyenne."

What he means to say no doubt: "But I doubt that. It's not the Comanche way. Sioux, Cheyenne, or Crow, maybe, not COMANCHE."

Small error, however, it does give the reader pause for a second to re-read and figure what Skye means but not saying.
