Book Description

March 20, 2012
From the authors of the “run†away success Run Like a Mother, a book that fans are clamoring for on how to train for a race, including practical advice on all aspects of race preparation presented with the authors’ trademark wit and empathy.

Since the publication of their first book, Run Like a Mother, the authors have built up an engaged, vibrant tribe of women runners--more than 10,000 fans on Facebook and an average of 2,500 daily visitors to anothermotherrunner.com--who are clamoring for another book. At its core, Train Like a Mother will comprehensively cover how to train for a race, including training plans for four race distances (5K, 10K, half-marathon, and marathon) for both beginner and more experienced runners; the importance of recovery; pre- and post-race nutrition; strength training; injury prevention (and rehab); and everything busy women need to know to add racing to their multitasking schedules. It is all presented with the same wit, empathy, and tone the avid fans connect and identify with.

The book is divided into 13.1 chapters--the distance of a half-marathon, the sweet spot for many mother runners--narrated by both Sarah and Dimity. Like the first book, Train Like a Mother chapters have plenty of sidebars, including Practical Motherly Advice (helpful information about training- and race-related advice), Take It from a Mother (advice and answers from the growing tribe of running moms), and Racy Talk (entertaining, race-related stories from the authors and other moms). The .1 sections are entertaining "commercial breaks" celebrating the sport of running and the added thrill of racing.

I love the humor and easy writing style of the authors. After reading Run Like a Mother, I was so excited for this book. It didn't disappoint! In addition to lots of advice and anecdotes, this book offers 2 training plans for each distance (5k, 10k, 13.1 and 26.2) - beginner and advanced. I'm currently in Week 9 of the Marathon: Finish It plan (20-week), and, with plenty of other things going on in my life, have really appreciated the flexibility. I would normally feel guilty about not rigidly following a plan, but these plans give you the option to skip the occasional run if life gets in the way. (Not the long run, though!) I'm so grateful for that permission, and I still feel 100% on track! Love the mix of hill workouts, interval training, tempo, race pace, easy pace, negative splits, etc. Keeps things interesting!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for all levels of runners! November 18, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I cannot say enough good things about this book and how it has made me a better runner. I bought it in April, after I'd been running for a year and completed my first half marathon. After running a half marathon, I decided to use this book to work on my 5k speed. Despite running a 5k in rough conditions (red flag at the start of the course due to heat and humidity), I STILL managed a 5K PR and saw my running speed increase overall as a result of the speed work. After finishing the 5k plan, I thought, "Hmm... I wonder what I could do with the half marathon Own It plan?" Remember, I bought this book just after completing my first half. While I was happy with my time in my first half, as my only goal was to finish it as strong as I could, I knew I could do better. I won't lie... the Own It half marathon plan is not easy. As I looked through the plan, I wondered what I was getting myself into especially since I'm a teacher and starting this plan coincided with the start of the school year. But I wanted that PR and I knew that the plans in this book could help me get there, so I told myself to shut up and do it.
As I followed this plan, I felt myself become a stronger, faster runner with each week that passed. It's not easy, of course, but is owning something ever easy? As race day drew near, the weather forecast was not favorable. Warmer than usual for November in the Midwest, but winds of 20-30mph with gusts up to 50mph predicted for the entire race--which was, of course, on country roads with wide open fields. No wind breaks. It felt like the wind was in my face for the entire race and yet, I still managed to pull of a THIRTEEN minute PR. Just like my 5k PR, it was in less than favorable weather and yet, the plans in this book are so strong that they make you stronger than poor weather conditions. Buy this book, whether you're just starting out or you want to improve your times--you won't regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great training plans! March 1, 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I really do love this book. The advice and anecdotes are down to earth and highly relatable for those trying to juggle a busy life AND a running life. The training plans are well-done and keep thing interesting with varying workouts, allowing for bailout days when life gets overwhelming and letting you know which workouts are too important to skip or skimp. I trained for my last race using the Own It Half Marathon plan, and couldn't be happier with my results. I recommend TLAM to all my running friends!
