Book Description

June 6, 2000
These are thematically linked novellas, each centering on a single woman living a quiet, gunmetal gray life. One is young, one middle-aged. They are alike in their resignation to shrunken expectations.

In THE TRAIN NOW DEPARTING a woman habitually lunches with a male travel writer who hates to travel. In WHEN THE MOUSETRAP CLOSES, a woman befriends a handsome, charming actor who betrays her.

Both men embroil the heroines in something dark and passionate, yet not overtly sexual. When the end arrives, it is bruising. Both novellas probe the cruelty of isolation with a clarity that pierces the heart. Once again, Grimes delivers the singular characters and richly textured prose readers expect from this bestselling storyteller.

"Grimes is gifted at explaining the private, sometimes horrifying yet utterly mundane thoughts of ordinary people." (San Francisco Chronicle)

Known for her Richard Jury mysteries, Martha Grimes offers a literary departure from her regular fare. Two novellas feature two lonely, single, middle-aged females each drawn to a male companion. The despair and loneliness of both women becomes apparent through the deft narration of Donada Peters. The aloof trickery of the men leaves the listener feeling the betrayals conveyed by the script. This brief book offers thought-provoking satisfaction. B.J.L. © AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

This review is from: The Train Now Departing: Two Novellas (The Train Now Departing & When (Audio Cassette)
The stories on these cassettes were disjointed, rambling, centered more on what the people were eating, talking and watching than an actual story. The main character was a lonely spinster who befriended people, who wanted to add some "luster" to her own life by learning about theirs. Seems she had difficulty with relationships and her conversations took place over meals. At the end of listening to both cassettes, my husband felt like it was a waste of time. Martha Grimes has done some good books; this must have been some of her first writings or perhaps a setting for a pilot for a book that never developed. If a person, like my husband, enjoys Ms. Grimes novels, this could be a disappointment.
