Alexander D. Mitchell IV is a historian, writer, and photographer specializing primarily in railroads and transportation history. His articles and photos have appeared in numerous magazines and newspapers over the years, including Trains, and Railfan & Railroad. He is also the author of Washington, D.C. Then and Now. Born and raised in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, he now resides in Baltimore, Maryland.

I really was looking to find a book that had the facts and the pictures to go with them! This was NOT it!!!!There is a lot of interesting information in this book, and it does cover a lot of area both historically and geographically. But it's not very well presented. There are also pages and pages with "fade-in/watermark"backgrounds that distract the reader from the pleasures available in the book's overall impact. Also many of the detailed photos of the depots and stations are in shadow and not very good quality. Overall, the impact of the book is lessened by the low quality of the photographs which should have been its best feature.
