This book was marketed as time travel science fiction, and that's what I'm reviewing it as.

This book was marketed as time travel science fiction, and that's what I'm reviewing it as.

In fact, it's a romance novel and time travel is only a weak plot device. There is no science in the book at all.

When I bought the book I figured that if it fell flat there would at least be some interesting train stuff - wrong there, too. There are a couple of little things, like crossing the precarious connection between cars, but mostly, the train is just another plot device.

I don't read romance novels, so I'm not going to comment on that aspect, other than to say that I thought the human relationship was one dimensional, underdeveloped, and nonsensical. I wasn't moved by the story at all.

The story is set at the turn of the 20th century. I'm not old enough to have lived at that time, but I am old enough to have talked to people who did experience it, and McBride misses the train on the flavor and experience of the era. That was a very conflicted and repressive time. A woman showing her ankle was a scandalous act; being seen in a Jeans dress, with bare lower legs would have set off a riot, and not the good kind. The material of her dress is discussed but the exposure doesn't even draw a comment. The people in the story do drive horses. Cars aren't mentioned, but the wealthy did have cars then. That could have been interesting.

I don't know anything about Seattle in 1901, I hope that was more informative, because for me, that was the most interesting part of the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Read, March 19, 2011
I enjoyed the historical detail and the interactions between the hero and heroine. I have trouble finding reads with a "sweet" heat level and so appreciated this one.
