I have been looking for a very long time for a positive reinforcement training book geared toward the average dog owner, who really just wants instructions on how to put some behaviors on cue.

I mean no disrespect to the many authors who have already written books promoting positive reinforcement to motivate dogs. However, most of these books include personal histories, lengthy discrediting of punishment and compulsion, and chapters of technical jargon. When I loaned them to someone who just wanted to learn some dog training, she just couldn't get through them. Even though I am very interested in learning theory, even I became bored with these books.

This book is wonderfully direct and completely avoids the use of technical jargon. Donaldson identifies the key behaviors that most people want, and gives excellent "recipes" on how to get those behaviors on cue using the lure-reward method. Her simple "drop-stick-push" formula is EASY and her recipes naturally include fading the lure - a big sticking point for those people who dislike luring. The troubleshooting chapters are fantastic and equally direct.

I now have a book I can highly recommend for basic training. (Behavioral issues are not addressed in this book. Since behavior issues are dealt with in a different fashion and can't be given the "recipe" treatment, I think that decision was a wise one. Most training books that tack on behavioral issues give them far too light a treatment.)

This book is beautifully written and simple for the everyday person to understand and the accompaning DVD is clear and so easy to follow.

I am a trainer myself and always run up against people continually repeating commands. The demonstrations are excellent and so easy to follow and I love the way encouragement is always given before asking the student to try the behaviour a different way - particularly not saying ANYTHING.

Brilliant book and I would recommend it for any beginner to train their dog and to achieve behaviours. Also a good reference for trainers to see how clean instructions can be conveyed.

I have only had a dog for about three months, and I spent the first month and a half in a panic as I waited for dog obedience class to begin. I was terrified that I was letting precious time pass with my new rescue dog, and not getting him working on training quickly enough. While I waited I read a few books, and all of them were helpful, giving good, though sometimes contradictory advice, but they were often very general with good tips, but no real concrete program. Some were more general discussions about how things should be with a dog, not about an effective way to get there, and I still felt lost.

Then I found this book just before starting my local obedience class. I watched the DVD first and then started exercises, and I felt instantly empowered, and my sweet dog really enjoyed our sessions, and the training achieved in just a few short weeks has been astounding. What is more, after a few live class sessions, I realize I'm actually getting more done with the book in our private sessions in my computer room at home than in a class with 10 other dogs and owners. I'm not saying that the book program should replace a live class, but if I had this book on DAY ONE, I wouldn't have been been so panicked as a dog novice.

There are some things I might have preferred to make the book perfect as a reference

1) a kindle edition (to accompany a hard traditional copy)
2) better separation of theory and practice sections - this only because the book ends up as a reference, so once the theory is read, the section on practice will be where you'll spend most of your time.
3) maybe a good schedule on the best order of behaviors to teach

All in all, this book is by far the best reference I've found for training. Thank you so much Ms. Donaldson, and thank you Amazon for making the package so incredibly affordable.

"Train Your Dog Like a Pro" nails many things, but it will mostly benefit people who are new to training and want to work with an outlined process. Donaldson has a wonderful perspective on dogs, and I really enjoyed her book, "Culture Clash." Buying this title, I was hoping for a book and DVD that was geared for someone who had already slogged through other books, grown into a competent trainer and wanted to take their training abilities to a higher, professional level. In my opinion, the book is not able to deliver on the promise of its title. (I really believe this title would scare away beginners, who could do well with this book.) However, watching Donaldson lead group training sessions on the DVD is a wonderful model of which to aspire. And the video should be inspiring for anyone new to dog training, providing footage of training moments with non-experts working with their dogs.

Beyond this, there are a few nuggets of wisdom that Donaldson has handled very well, such as how she stresses her rule of fives and how pros work with a plan to know when to drop, stick or push.
