More About the Author

Born and raised in Wimbledon, England, Victoria Stilwell is one of the world's most recognized and respected dog trainers.

She is best known for her role as the star of Animal Planet's hit TV series It's Me or the Dog, through which she is able to share her insight and passion for positive reinforcement dog training and as a judge on CBS's Greatest American Dog. Having filmed over 110 episodes since 2005, Stilwell reaches audiences in over 60 countries while counseling families on their pet problems.

In the early 1990s, Stilwell began her career in pet training when she created her own successful dog-walking company and immediately recognized the need for qualified professionals to help her clients with the training process. While pursuing a successful acting career (working in London's West End as well as in numerous films, TV series, commercials and voiceovers), she expanded her focus to dog training by learning from some of Britain's most respected positive-reinforcement dog trainers and behaviorists.

After moving to the U.S. with her husband, Stilwell co-founded several successful dog training companies up and down the East Coast, quickly establishing herself as one of New York's most sought after dog trainers. With a particular fondness for rescue animals in need of behavior rehabilitation, Stilwell devoted much of her time and energy to a number of animal rescue organizations in New York and Atlanta, serving as a behavior advisor and giving regular seminars on the subject of dog rescue, training and rehabilitation while becoming one of the leading voices in the field of dog training and behavior.

Stilwell is passionate about using positive reinforcement training methods that enhance a dog's ability to learn while increasing confidence, resulting in a healthy, well-adjusted pet. She is firmly against the use of forceful, dominance-based training techniques, which often result in 'quick fixes' but ultimately cause more long-term harm than good.

Her first two best-selling books, It's Me or the Dog: How to Have the Perfect Pet and Fat Dog Slim: How to Have a Healthy, Happy Pet, have been widely praised, and they detail her core reward-based training philosophy: avoid the use of pain, fear and punishment while helping to build mutual trust, respect and love through the implementation of her scientifically-backed positive training methods. Her third book, Train Your Dog Positively, will be released in the US in the spring of 2013.

A regular guest on talk shows, news broadcasts and radio programs throughout the US, Europe and Asia, Stilwell was named 2009's Dog Trainer of the Year at the Purina ProPlan Dog awards and was the recipient of the prestigious 2011 Excellence in Journalism and Outstanding Contributions to the Pet Industry Award.

Since its premiere in 2005, Stilwell's show, It's Me or the Dog, has filmed over 100 episodes in both the UK and US and has been the recipient of multiple honors including 2011 and 2012 Genesis Award Nominations and a 2009 People's Choice Award nomination. Stilwell is a regular columnist several magazines including Dogs Today, and she has been featured in numerous journals, magazines and newspapers including The New York Times, USA Today, Cosmopolitan, Time.com, Oprah Magazine, Rachael Ray Everyday, MSNBC.com, Self Magazine, Shape Magazine, The Daily Mail, and The Sun.

Stilwell is the Editor-in-Chief of Positively.com which features the world's leading veterinary behaviorists, dog trainers and behavioral scientists on her Positively Expert Blog. She also serves as the CEO of Victoria Stilwell Positively Dog Training - the world's premier global network of positive reinforcement dog trainers. In addition to her globally available Positively Podcast series, she also produces several shows in her role as the director of training and behavior for the popular eHow Pets YouTube channel.

Stilwell is committed to helping the cause of animal rescue and rehabilitation and is heavily involved organizations around the world to increase awareness of puppy mills, dogfighting, animal abuse, pet overpopulation, dog bite prevention and other animal-related causes. A co-founder of the national Dog Bite Prevention conference series, Stilwell is also a National Ambassador for the American Humane Association and serves on the Advisory Boards of RedRover, DogTV, Dognition and Canine Assistants. She is a member of the US Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) and the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC).

Victoria currently resides in Atlanta with her husband, daughter and two rescue dogs, Sadie and Jasmine.

I just started watching the author's show and was excited to start learning her positive training methods. I was already convinced that I wanted to use positive training with my adolescent Australian Shepherd, unfortunately a huge portion of the book is devoted to convincing you how positive training is better than dominance based.

What I was hoping for was a book giving specific training lessons, basically first do this then do that, instead most of the behavior issues started with a story followed by a vague explanation on how she fixed the dog and finishing with a recommendation to contact one of her certified trainers.

If you aren't sure about positive training, I would recommend this book to explain the advantages over dominance training.

If you are already convinced and looking for guidance, I'd recommend skipping this one.

The best things about this book are that it dispells the myth that dogs are striving for dominance and it advocates a humane, commmon-sense approach to training your dog.

Stilwell devotes much of the first part of the book to discussing the dominance myth, and you don't have to just take her word for it--this information is thoroughly researched and footnoted. Once we get past the idea that we have to "dominate" our dogs and "show them who's boss," so many misguided, counterproductive, cruel, and even downright dangerous training techniques fall by the wayside.

The book features many case studies that reinforce a common theme: Dogs who are trained with positive reinforcement (treats, happy voice, ear scratches) learn more easily and eagerly, and dogs who get plenty of exercise, socialization, and mental stimulation are happier, calmer, and less likely to "misbehave".

Wow! Thank you Victoria Stilwell for focusing on the dog training methods controversy, as well as providing great samples of using Positive Reinforcement training to solve difficult dog behavior problems. This book is a delight to read and it's chock full of truly dog-friendly tips and ways to enhance our relationships with our beloved companions WHILE teaching Good Manners. Not an easy trick, but really doable once you get the hang of it! I especially like Victoria's debunking of old-fashioned dominance training myths about "red zone" dogs who, in reality, need gentle treatments in order to improve behavior.

I have to say, this is one of the most informative dog training books I've read to date. The reason is, in part, because of the incredible amount of resources that Victoria offers in the book. Yep, she backs up EVERYTHING she states regarding dog body language, dog aggression, and dog training. Scientific proof - right there in the book for you to check out.

Not to mention, it's FULL of training tips for the most common problems that people are having with their dogs. Tips that are easy to understand, and to practice (for example, a simple house-training schedule with feeding and walking times, for your puppy or dog). I've used quite a few of these tips with my own dog, and she's incredibly well-behaved, as well as one of the sweetest dogs I've ever had. And I owe this lovely dog's behavior, to the use of ONLY force free/positive reinforcement training.

Victoria is very straight forward, and to the point with her writing - which is one of the reasons I respect her so much. No sugar coating here. She's extremely passionate about what she does, and if you weren't aware of her passion before, you certainly get it from this book. This incredible work of instruction teaches you that it really IS all about your relationship with your dog, and how to celebrate that relationship by implementing respect and using positive reinforcement to train.

As a professional dog trainer, I read every dog training book I can get my hands on. This by far is the best book I have ever read regarding dogs.
Every dog owner, trainer, veterinarian, groomer and dog sitter should read this book.
I plan to buy one book for each of my clients and the veterinarians I work with.
Thank you Victoria for writing a book that is easy to understand, is loaded with science based training methods, and full of great information.

For several years we have enjoyed watching Animal Planet's "Its Me or the Dog" and have learned so many good tips on correcting one of man's best friends' bad habits. Since we acquired our Lhasa pup, who is now 17 months old, I have read Victoria's training books and just recently added Train Your Dog Positively to my stack of must have books. It is a very thorough book that is a mixed bag of no-nonsense and blunt comments about trainers, manufacturers, and owners who provide and use negative and harmful accessories, products, and tactics to train dogs. It may take longer to break bad habits using her techniques but in the long run will establish a bond between owner and pet that is more humane and respectful. If you are willing to take the time, make the effort, and want to establish a positive experience between you and your four-legged friend, then Victoris's latest book Train Your Dog Positively will be a great addition to your collection.
