5.0 out of 5 stars How to be a pirate- GREAT!, December 5, 2004
A Kid's Review
After reading "How to train your dragon by Cressida Cowell" I went on a search for other books by this author. I stumbled upon "How to be a pirate", second in the series. It has as much humor as the first book, that means a lot! All the original characters are in the book, including a few new people and dragons. I reccommend this book to all people. If you haven't read the first book in the series "How to train your dragon" then you should read that first. There are also pictures through-out the book. Soem are humerous, some make the writing more imaginable. This is one of the best books I have ever read.

4.0 out of 5 stars sublime silliness, June 17, 2010

This review is from: How to Train Your Dragon Book 2: How to Be a Pirate (How to Train Your Dragon (Heroic Misadventures of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III)) (Paperback)
The "How to Train Your Dragon" books are sublime silliness. After my grandson saw the "How to Train Your Dragon" movie I purchased the book for him and now he is into the second book of the series. He is 6 going on 7 and the fun of these books encourages his listening to stories but also his budding reading skills. Even though, as an Eng Lit major, I can't vouch for their classic worth, they are great fun and wonderful for a young reader's introduction to reading chapter books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hiccup does it again!, May 2, 2010
This review is from: How to Train Your Dragon Book 2: How to Be a Pirate (How to Train Your Dragon (Heroic Misadventures of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III)) (Paperback)
Recently the "How to Train Your Dragon" movie came out, and it reminded me how much I loved the books when I was younger. After reading them again, I still love them. "How to be a Pirate" is a swashbuckling story of how Hiccup, his friend Fishlegs, and Toothless are taken along on a journey to find the lost treasure of Grimbeard the Ghastly. Hiccup escapes danger at every turn, and his cleverness saves him from many tough situations. The whole story will keep just about anyone's interest, with it's constant action and humorous characters. This story will appeal to the young, and the young at heart. I totally recommend this book.

Even though I'm probably a little above the target group for this book's audience, I love dragons and I easily fell in love with this whole series. It was easy to read and had the kind of subtle humor and sarcasm (mostly contributed by the main character Hiccup)that I enjoy.

I hate to admit it, but I wasn't very good about reading to my son until we found this series. Every chapter is a cliff hanger and we are eager to get started the next evening. If my husband reads to him, I'll read it myself so I don't miss a chapter. The stories are funny and smart without being full of potty humor. It's nice to read about a decent normal kid who thinks his way out of his problems even if he doesn't get credit for it. Goodbye Captain Underpants!

4.0 out of 5 stars Because everybody loves/hates pirates, June 21, 2010
This review is from: How to Train Your Dragon Book 2: How to Be a Pirate (How to Train Your Dragon (Heroic Misadventures of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III)) (Paperback)
Cowell has to be one of the funniest authors currently in children's literature. She manages to take picture book charm, heart, and morality and push it up a few more years to juvenile fiction--and she is one funny and talented author that serves up her jaunty, thoroughly British writing with plenty of hilarity.

The young Vikings are learning everything a good Viking pirate should know when a mysterious coffin appears. Of course it is opened, and out pops a man claiming to know the location of a legendary buried treasure. Any reader familiar with the ways of children's literature would probably suspect this isn't good. You could take it either as obvious or as fun suspicion ala "Series of Unfortunate Events" and go with it. I recommend the latter.

Cowell keeps up all the humor of the first book. It's zany, boyish, and even sometimes dark, but gosh darn it if it doesn't work. Once more, there's a great little message. Frankly, it's rare to see a book that is all at once well-written, well-told, funny, and packs a message and heart.

This is the second book in a great series. Although you will notice it's not exaclty like the movie, but is very fun. I like to read this to my little neighbor boys. They are simple stories, but have some big words that are fun to talk about. It's hard to find stories appropriate for young kids that we can enjoy reading too. The art in here is crude, but the guys love them.

My 9 year old grandson loves the How to train your dragon series. He had much rather be
playing video games than reading but when I started getting this series of books he loved
reading. He even checks out the next book in line and tells me about it.
