Editorial Reviews

About the Director

I began filming these because I was bored to tears watching either TV reruns or other mainstream cycling workout videos. I wanted to be able to ride my favorite routes during the off season when it was too cold, wet or snowy. But, after demo-ing the videos, it wasn't enough to simply enjoy the scenery. I wanted to recreate the ride's intensity and its gradient. So, when the ride approaches a hill, something on the screen tells you when to shift, or, when you sit on a wheel, something tells you when to down shift. So, I developed the gear ratio guide and the intensity meter. Many other videos disappointed me with heart rates displayed as beats per minute. When I was 20 I might be able to match the pros, but, not any more. So, I converted the BPM to a percent of max. All you need to simply do is have a heart rate monitor that displays your heart rate as a % of max and you will be able to match the efforts during the video.

That still wasn't good enough. I wanted to know where I was along the route in the video. When you're watching a 2D video, you have no concept of your location and its frustrating. So, I added 2 overlay maps, one with your position along the entire route and another with a close up displaying your speed and elevation. These maps are synced with the video.

I also added a hill profile that is color coded with the maps. Then, I topped it all off with a cycling position graphic that pops up when it's time to get out of the saddle and climb or when it's time to hit the drops.

All in all, this is what is created when you merge a cycling fool with a computer geek!

Paul

Product Description

When watching the Tour de France or Tour of California climbing stages, I empathize with the poor bastards who crack and fall away from the main pack. Elite climbers combine strength, psychological discipline and aerobic godliness to artistic levels. I am awed by their stamina and grace!

This video trains these attributes to help you improve your ascents. With grades up to 14% you'll be maintaining a heart rate in the mid 90's for the entirety of this difficult climb. By the end of this workout, your legs will be toast and you'll be pedaling squares!

Exclusive CVO heads up display dashboard

  • Real time heart rate
  • Real time cadence
  • Real time resistance
  • Plus GPS map, speed, elevation and more!

  • Track 1. Music over the natural sounds of the ride
  • Track 2. The natural sounds of the ride

Please read customer reviews carefully, there are video demos in there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, fun ride!, March 18, 2011
This review is from: Training to Climb! Part 2: The Rattlesnake Bite! Cycling Colorado 5 (DVD)
Length:: 6:08 Mins

One ride that demonstrates how crazy and unpredictable it is on the road. Great addition to the rest of the CVO tapes. Its easy to follow and entertaining at the same time. Great ride!! If you like the uphill, you'll love the crazy, roller coaster ride that is the downhill part.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Virtual Bike Training Video Period, December 23, 2009
This review is from: Training to Climb! Part 2: The Rattlesnake Bite! Cycling Colorado 5 (DVD)
I have purchased several of the virtual reality videos from "Behind the Bars with Paul" and this is by far the "Very Best Virtual Trainer Workout Video Ever". The workout is plenty long enough and the heart and legs feel it big time. The virtual reality of the ride brings you into the ride and you can forget you are not actually out on the road. If you use the heads up information that is supplied on the screen and keep it honest, this workout will kick your butt. This video climbs until your legs fall off and your heart is pounding out of your chest. I would highly recommend any of Paul's videos wanting a great way to workout or just get in some indoor miles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great Behind the Bars of Paul video!, March 16, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Training to Climb! Part 2: The Rattlesnake Bite! Cycling Colorado 5 (DVD)
We are totally hooked on Paul's cycling videos and now own about seven of them. They are a great way to get in a hard ride during the winter, or (in the case of West Texas) when it's so windy that riding outside is miserable. These videos are infinitely better, and way more fun, than spinning videos. You actually do feel like you are out on the road doing the ride and by using the information provided on the screen you ARE going to get a great workout. If you are sweating by the end of the BtBoP videos, you aren't using the graphics and challenging yourself. There's no one screaming at you to push - it's all up to you. I keep a log of my rides, both outdoors and on the trainer, and I have definitely improved over the course winter by using Paul's cycling videos.

The scenery in this one is great! Oh yeah - and it will kick your butt and have your legs screaming by the time you reach the summit.

Thanks for another great ride, Paul!
