Eric Horst is THE expert on training for climbing. This book is by far the most up-to-date and complete source on everything from the mental to technical to the physical aspects relating to climbing. It provides and explains the concepts in simple terms and provides the scientific reasoning behind them. Proven strategies that work.

It is a MUST for any climber, regardless of age, sex, skills or style - it really helps one improve results fast by better understanding how the body acts and reacts before, during and after climing.

It really covers everything a climber needs to know and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Training for Climbing, March 4, 2011
This review is from: Training for Climbing, 2nd: The Definitive Guide to Improving Your Performance (How To Climb Series) (Paperback)
This is an outstanding book about training for climbing. It covers a wide range of topics and all with a solid scientific basis. The writing style is extremely easy to read and entertaining to boot. I have to say I disagree with the reviewer who said there is too much focus on mental training. This is a small, but integral part of this book. This book looks at mental training, skills and strategy, strength training, personal programs, nutrition, recovery and injury prevention. It also includes training charts you can use, additional tips and a comprehensive glossary. All in all an excellent guide to training from a respected climber and climbing journalist. Highly recommended for beginner or more experienced climber alike.

Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.

This book helped me a lot to improve in many aspects of climbing, and setup a serious training regime with real objectives. I helps you to work in conditioning exercises SPECIFIC to climbing and to avoid other types of workout that may even be detrimental. I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars I really like this book, August 8, 2011
This review is from: Training for Climbing, 2nd: The Definitive Guide to Improving Your Performance (How To Climb Series) (Paperback)
The author is very knowledgeable about climbing and athletic practices. He cites lots of scientific articles on exercise science and has spoken with lots of leading researchers in the field, some of whom are climbers. He harness all this information to make a real, factual based book on climbing that will definitely make you a better climber. Note that only about 1/4 of the book is on physical training. This confused me at first, but turned out to be very helpful. I learned a lot about the mental game of climbing that made me a better climber. I now feel more confident training because I have the right focus for climbing and I know what practice can help improve my climbing.

Enjoy! Excellent book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for Intermediate - Advanced Climbers, April 20, 2011

This review is from: Training for Climbing, 2nd: The Definitive Guide to Improving Your Performance (How To Climb Series) (Paperback)
I just started climbing in August, so I was hoping for more on technique. That being said, this book is excellently written and will be a huge asset once I've gotten bored with the 5.7s and 5.8s I'm climbing now and I'm ready to start a genuine training program. Until then, I've loaned this book to a friend at the rock gym that's more experienced and she loves it. :) Good book for your personal library if you love climbing.
