Editorial Reviews

Quick response to natural and man-made disasters can mean the difference between life and death for trapped victims. Highly trained Disaster Search Dogs (DSD) teams are an increasingly important component in response efforts to save lives in the face of terrorist attacks, earthquake, and floods - and training these teams has never been more important. Whether you aspire to have your dog ready to help your community in case of a local disaster or you wish to select and train a dog to become part of a certified Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) DSD team, this is the first book written that tells you how to do it. Training the Disaster Seach Dog describes the step-by-step training methods that human-dog teams use to locate victims in rubble and is based on the author's 28 years of field experience. You will learn: To teach DSD skills using positive training techniques How to build and train with the specialized equipment used in training How to prepare for the FEMA DSD certifications tests What it is like to part of a disaster recovery effort. Here is what other dog professionals have to say: "A great book? For anyone seriously interested in learning what it takes to train a Disaster Search Dog...a book that I can refer to aspiring dog handlers. It guides you through selection of a perfect puppy through training a mission-ready disaster dog." -Ann McCurdy, Canine Training Director, FEMA Indiana Task Force 1, Lead Canine Evaluator for FEMA/DHS Canine Evaluations.

Knowing Shirley and having been there for the evolution of the Disaster Search Dog standards, I can say this is the best - and, so far, only - book to use for this category of training. Completely understanding what needs to be done and stating the process clearly, her book is the starting place for anyone contemplating FEMA Disaster Dog work. You need to be part of a team to complete the training, but this book will tell you what you need to do and help you make the decision to commit to the process - or not!

Format: Paperback
Shirley is upfront on what it takes to become a Disaster Search team. The team is the dog and handler and while the dog may have the skills the handler also has to be prepared to handle the disaster scene.

Shirley explains how agility skills can be translated into helping your dog become a Disaster Search Dog as part of her training triangle. Shirley also comprehensively lays out training goals and plans and how to implement them with your dog to make you successful in this new training.

The Appendix information is helpful for determining if your dog would be successful as a Disaster Search Dog or if your puppy would be. There's also useful instructions on how to build your own training equipment. The book uses photographs and diagrams to explain concepts to further learning.

Shirley will be a guest author at CSDogBookReview in August 2006 and many are looking forward to her visit!

This book had me hooked from page one. I have now read more than a dozen books on SAR work for dogs and "Training The Disaster Search Dog" is one of my favorites. No other book has so clearly helped me decide on indication cues and other little things that I need to do a varriety of different types of k-9 SAR work.

While this book is more directed to the disaster search dog, and I am training dogs more for field tracking, I still found the training and advice to be some of the best I have read.

Training the Disaster Search Dog came highly recommended by a trainer at a weekend disaster training seminar I attended. The book is clearly written and focuses on building basic skills step by step. Each step is explained so you know how to train it and why it is important. It was also helpful to have diagrams, dimensions and instructions for building training aids.

There's no other book like this one that breaks down the elements of training an urban search-and-rescue dog. I already had it in paperback but wanted it for my kindle.

After buying or borrowing a variety of texts introducing scent work, search work, dog selection, handler development, the disaster environment, obedience fundamentals, and a myriad of other related topics, I found this text to be the one with which I should have started. Ms. Hammond clearly created this work as a labor of love, and it offers information sufficiently detailed to help potential handlers understand the work into which they aspire to enter. She sugar-coats nothing, emphasizes the importance of a training plan, offers useable training plan structures, covers the range of fundamentals, and leaves it to you to judge whether this is something you are sufficiently prepared to undertake and have adequate access to resources to bring to fruition.

I would definitiely recommend this text to someone contemplating entering the disaster search world and other USAR members who desire to better understand the canine team members with whom they serve.
