Book Description

November 30, 2000
Training from the Heart argues that the most effective and influential learning professionals have at least two things in common-they know why they are trainers and they understand that training is a partnership. This book shows its readers how to find their own training heart, and use this discovery to create a better climate for learning in which learners actually apply the lessons from the classroom to the job.

About the Author

Barry Lyerly has a master's degree of arts in counselor education from the University of Iowa. As the former director of training at Marshall Field's in Chicago, he has trained and coached hundreds of people in a broad range of subjects, including presentation skills, leadership, team building, interpersonal effectiveness, and sales. His clients have included Crate & Barrel, Ace Hardware, Rockwell International, Bank of America, Lake Forest Hospital, and McDonald's Corporation.

Lyerly founded Lyerly Seminars in 1984. He has been a featured speaker for the Midwest Training Conference in Chicago, Illinois Hospital Association, Data Entry Managers Association, American Society for Training & Development International Conference & Exposition, and the Chicago Sales Training Association.

Lyerly has trained other trainers on his unique learning design, Insight to Action. Trainers who have benefited from this design include "professors" at McDonald's Hamburger University, internal and external facilitators at the University of Chicago Hospital's Academy, and HR professionals at the Bank of America. Cyndi Maxey earned her master's degree of arts in communication studies from Northwestern University at Evanston. She is now a speaker, trainer, and author who helps people fine-tune their speaking and listening skills. As the owner of Maxey Creative since 1989, she has developed and presented workshops internationally for such clients as Wendy's International, DARC Development Corporation, and Discover Financial Services.

She was a co-author for The Communication Coach: Business Communication Tips from the Pro's, a business communication anthology published by Coloring Outside the Lines in 1998. Her articles have appeared in several publications, including Training & Development, Professional Speaker, Training Today, Business 2 Business Marketer, and Employee Relations Quarterly.

Maxey, a certified speaking professional with the National Speakers Association, is a popular conference presenter on training and communication techniques. Active in the local and regional leadership of ASTD, she has won several ASTD-sponsored awards for service to the training field.

This is one of the few books that I have read on the subject in the last several years that I not only kept in my library, but continue to read and recommend to others. The information covered is broad enough to be relevant to just about anyone in the training field, whether you train internal staff or are a trainer/speaker in the outside world. Getting 2 authors' experiences and perspectives is an added bonus. This book is an easy read that you will probably find yourself going back to again and again, which is rare to find in our information overload society!

5.0 out of 5 stars Training From the Heart, March 17, 2001

Sometimes a book just speaks to you...gives you that spark that develops into an insight, provides the nudge that moves you to action. Training From the Heart is one of those books. A must for those new to the field, and a thoughtful "coach" for those of us seasoned in the profession, the book is a combination of "how to's" and "how do you presently do?" As an independent OD consultant, I found particular value in the chapter addressing gaining intimacy with the client...something one tends to forget in the faster faster world of today's business. The chapter on creating a service motto motivated me to reflect on my own purpose for being in the business. I came away from the book with valuable ideas and new personal insights.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rich, Relevant, and Readabloe, February 23, 2001
This review is from: Training from the Heart (Paperback)
I have been a trainer over 15 years and a trainer of trainers for over 10. There are many courses to deliver skills, there are a number of books to catalog "tools and techniques," but Lyerly and Maxey have invited you into their living room for an interview with them! Training from the Heart captures the work and the spirit of of the profession then provides great tools to challenge the reader to apply the material in their own work. Many trainers I meet want to be more heartfelt in their facilitation but too often slip back into traditional lecture, "I'm the teacher" modes. This work more than any other I know will resonate with the sincere trainer, then powerfully show them how to lead learners and yet still join the participants as a partner.

I highly recommend this work to trainers in any field and especially to those who train other trainers.
