4.0 out of 5 stars Practical and specific... an extremely useful reference, April 10, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Training On the Job (Paperback)
Diane Walter's "Training On the Job" is extremely practical. The language and recommendations are specific and not overly academic. I found this book to be highly useful and well-organized. I believe that her approach can be applied to a variety of business training situations for a broad spectrum of industries.

It weds traditional training design and development concepts (using a modified ADDIE model lifecycle) with adult learning concepts. It focuses on team-driven structured on-the-job training in a thorough and clear manner. It defines significant roles for training professionals and yet the focus is on workplace learning led by local subject matter experts.

This also supports your company's organization development efforts by placing an emphasis on teamwork, by using reduced resources effectively and by focusing attention on the task-level.

It isn't filled with lofty ideals or clever warm-ups. It doesn't have sections on communication or team-building. Those are easily available elsewhere. This book will help you to plan and implement a successful and educationally-sound OJT program.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly the Best On-the-Job Training Book on the Market!, January 23, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Training On the Job (Paperback)
I'm really impressed with the simplicity of this approach and the clarity it brings to teaching and evaluating trainees. Walter's emphasis on the role of teams, subject matter experts, and on-the-job trainers is causing us to rethink our entire training program. Anyone can use the methodology by following the guidelines that are clearly established. This system combines sound principles of instructional design and human factors with an approach that breaks into manageable pieces the often overwhelming task of developing structured OJT. The book provides all the tools you need. It describes in eight easy steps, how to develop a complete structured on-the-job training program that is set up and run by employees who perform the job. Each chapter is self-contained so that you can use what you want, when you want it - everything from identifying the need for on-the-job training, to completing a task analysis, to writing training materials, to selecting, training and certifying trainers, and conducting OJT. Every chapter tells you step-by-step what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. Anyone who wants to standardize procedures and processes and train in a consistent manner should own this book!
