The rubber meets the road in Doc Fuder's account of taking the classroom training geared for seminary students and applying what Jesus himself did with his disciples: putting feet to formal teaching and letting God transform the learner in unexpected ways! Relating real-life encounters on the streets of Los Angeles, Fuder has fomented a sound process of taking ministry students on a journey of classroom instruction and walking into the real world.
A palpable take-away is the process of reflecting on one's emotional responses that one experiences when encountering intense suffering. If one is willing to hear God's voice, the journey takes biblical training and teaching directed to a student and encourages repeated reflection on the emotional disruptions experienced when witnessing first-hand the trauma of urban life. Yet instead of falling back to patterns of guilt and apathy, Fuder encourages a coach to walk with the student to process the flood of emotions and let God produce a crop of compassion and conviction that leads to a balanced, biblical gospel engagement. This book is a codification of Fuder's doctoral dissertation, but is a story of the journey and a powerful instrument for anyone wishing to do urban ministry for the long haul.

It was hard to set this book down. I have read many books on urban ministry but never from a "practical" or "experiential" perspective. This professor has and presently lives urban ministry. Please enjoy this read.
