2.0 out of 5 stars A couple problems
After making a strong case that Boxers need specialized training, there seems to be little in it particular to the Boxer. I wonder if this is just an edit off one of the other Barron's books.

Two, the author pushes treats as training rewards, which many believe isnt the best.

This review is from: Training Your Boxer (Training Your Dog) (Paperback)
Boxers are excellent learners and this book, "Training Your Boxer," gives you the tools to transform your puppy or adult Boxer into a great companion and good canine citizen. (All techniques detailed in this book use positive reinforcement.) Training chapters include: House-training, Socialization, Habituation, Beginning Command Training, Five Basic Commands , Nine More Commands, Five Boxer Tricks, Aggression, Looking for Trouble, Non-competitive Activities and Competitive Activities. More than 100 full-color photographs detail how each command is taught. The foreword to the book was written by Tracy Hendrickson, owner/trainer of the ABC Performance Dog of the Year/2000, and Norbert Zawatzki, director of training for the Boxer Klub e.v. Sitz Munchen.

Two, the author pushes treats as training rewards, which many believe isnt the best.

Three, on some topics, like handling aggression, the author just punts - 'consult an expert.' Not very helpful.

All in all, I prefer the Monks of New Skeet, and "The Art of Raising a Puppy."

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprised!!!, July 11, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Training Your Boxer (Training Your Dog) (Paperback)
I bought a lot of dog training books. I thought it could be trained with a Boxer too. But now I know that Boxers respond very diffrently than any other dog. This book is written by a Boxer lover who knows the Boxer breed inside out, better than anyone else. I thought it was going to be those ol' chapter books with barely any demonstration picutres, but when I opened it up, I was surprised at how easy it is to understand how to take care of a Boxer. I'm still waiting for a Boxer of this person that I know to be sold. The little pup has just been born last week, and I live in NE. And the Nebraska law says that dogs can only be sold at the age of 8 weeks minimum. I have to research and know how to deal with Boxers before I get one to really make this Boxer a true, and happy gentlemen in my house. I have experience with some Boxers before, and I use to think they were the aggressive American Bulldog types because of the look, but now I found out that it is really a gentle clown deep in heart. I just love the Boxer more than any other breed in the world. A fun family dog, a formidable guard dog, a gentle children side kick all in one dog: The Boxer. If you plan on owning a Boxer, thinking about owning a Boxer, or already owning a Boxer, this is something you MUST read if you want a good Boxer dog.

Highly recommended for the prospective boxer owner. Offers a unique perspective to training the boxer and covers most facets of ownership. Lots of good practical information in terms anyone can understand. Have read the book repeatedly and glean more information each time. Will be a continuing source of reference as my boxer matures. Thanks to Joan Walker for this outstanding practical guide.
