Book Description

November 30, 2002
Training a foal is not child's play! It can be a fascinating experience, but it requires the correct mixture of experience, horse knowledge and intuitive feeling. The way a horse is trained and treated in its first two years - along with its inborn traits - determines how it will behave for the rest of its life. This book is full of useful information about the physical, behavioural and mental development of the young horse and sets out the correct way of training a horse to be responsive, safe and enjoyable to ride. Anyone interested in horses will find this a fascinating book, as it explains much about horses' behaviour that so often at first sight seems impenetrably mysterious. * Essential basic knowledge, tips and suggestions, to ensure the successful training of your foal: - Imprint training - First learning steps - Learning with mother - - Weanlings and Yearlings - First public appearances - Sexual maturity - - Weaning the foal - Problems of 'adolescence' - Obedience & discipline - - First gymnastic exercises - First backing (mounting) the young horse - * Invaluable reference book for all horse owners, horse breeders and anyone rearing a foal.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Great color photos . . . This is a very useful book that starts at the imminent signs of birth and continues through from foal imprinting to breaking in the young horse as a three-year-old."--Valley Country

From the Back Cover

Training a foal is no child's play! It can be a fascinating experience, but it requires the correct mixture of experience, horse knowledge and intuitive feeling.
Correct training follows from knowledge of how horses develop physically, mentally, and behaviorally. A horse that has been treated incorrectly as a foal may never be reliable. It may be prone to suspicion and panic reactions throughout its entire life.
A well-trained foal is much easier to back, and its first hack will be a less risky undertaking. In addition to the essential basic knowledge, the author offers tips and suggestions to ensure the successful training of your foal: imprint training, first learning steps, learning with mother, weaning the foal, problems of "adolescence", obedience and discipline, first gymnastic exercises, initial backing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bought this for my 15 year old daughter, January 4, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Training Your Foal: Raising a Foal: from Birth to Backing (Hardcover)
I bought this book for my daughter. She lost her older hunter horse and decided she didnt want another made horse. She could never replace him so she wanted a foal and to raise it herself. Well Bella is only 7 months old and a handful but by using this and one other book she has already taught her to lead. Just a few minutes for a couple of days and using these techniques she has had small successes. this is one of the better books that I could find for it was easy to understand the directions and pictures. It is one of the better books to purchase if you plan on raising a baby too. John Lyons is other book that is a great one for guidance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Covers all the basics for a first time foal owner., March 10, 2008
This review is from: Training Your Foal (Paperback)
This was a great book for a first time foal owner. I could see how it would be useful to the "old pro" as well. Very informative, with tips and hints from birth to backing. I will be sure to keep it on hand over the next few years!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book for getting started with your foal, January 3, 2008
This review is from: Training Your Foal (Paperback)
This book gave good information and was easy to read. This is definitely more of a book for beginners though. I wanted to get a bunch of ideas for lessons to do, and I did, but a lot of times I felt like the book just kept going on and on explaining the same thing in ten different ways. I would have liked the explaining of how and why you do each type of lesson to be more short and to the point. But all in all, I would have still bought the book because it did have a lot of good information.
