Wonderful training book!,
By
This review is from: Training Your Labrador Retriever (Training Your Dog) (Paperback)
I saw this book at a client's house while there to give their Lab a private lesson. As a clicker trainer, I am usually wary of training books because so many of them give outdated advice. What a wonderful surprise this book turned out to be! It is filled with dead-on, fabulous advice & is written in a clear, easy to read style. It is enhanced by plenty of photos and illustrations, as well. I was particularly impressed by the inclusion of items such as Calming Signals! I highly recommend this book for owners of any breed dog who want to learn to train & communicate with their dog in the most effective and humane way. I plan to buy this book to offer for sale in my dog obedience school.

Good Book On Training Man's Best Buddy!,
By Barron Laycock "Labradorman" (Temple, New Hampshire United States) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Training Your Labrador Retriever (Training Your Dog) (Paperback)
I really liked this book, which is no mean feat, given the fact that I am a person who's had the distinct pleasure of sharing his house and his life with as many as six Labrador retrievers at a time over the last 20 years (I now have four), I am acutely aware of the wonder and awe associated with getting such a wonderful companion can be. Yet, sadly, I am also aware of the profound ignorance many would-be labrador-people are regarding how to select, introduce, and socialize this new member of the family.
In that sense, this book , along with a number of others (e.g. Richard Wolper's "Family Dog") can provide the wary would-be initate with all of the essentials on how to successfully transform that cute little puppy into a happy, obdeient, and well-integrated member of the household. This book does offer one the expert advice one needs regarding the care and nurture of what has now become the single most popular breed in the United States, with information ranging from an impromptu history of Labrador Retrievers to such topics such as adoption options. The book also delivers to the prospective owner a wealth of facts and details regarding Labrador Retrievers. The book provides essential and vital information regarding nutrition, socialization, and exercise, and offers some sage advice about how to find and select a reputable breeder. In addition, it also touches on aspects of ownerships such as common illnesses and chronic problems associated with the breed. This is a book I can heartily recommend! Enjoy!

Great for Companion Pet Training,
By "kjtallant" (Cumming, GA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Training Your Labrador Retriever (Training Your Dog) (Paperback)
This is an excellent place to start training your Lab. The author will take you through everything from house-breaking to basic commands (sit, stay, down, come) and even some tricks. The author takes advantage of the incredibly high food drive of Labs, and uses that to teach them things without negative reinforcement. This book will help you do a good job of what it is designed to accomplish -- train a pet. However, you need to know what you're buying. If you want a lot of information on the history of the breed, I recommend trying another book such as Labrador Retreiver: The Dog That Does It All. On the other hand, if you will be field training your pooch, then I recommend a couple of "oldies but goodies," such as Gun Dog or Water Dog, by Richard Wolters. Either way -- get the books before you get the dog -- and read them.

We have a 6 month old black lab. She has been a handful to say the least. We have looked at training videos online, gone to a puppy classes, and read several books. This is the best book by far for understanding our baby girl. I would highly suggest this book to any existing or potential lab owner.

Short, Simple, and it Really Works!,
By
This review is from: Training Your Labrador Retriever (Training Your Dog) (Paperback)
I read this book cover-to-cover before I got my first lab pup (8 weeks old) and used it religiously to train him. It was very intuitive and easy to read/understand, and it really worked. People are always commenting on how well-behaved and obedient my dog ("Hendrix") is. I have lent this book to at least four other dog owners, and they have all reported similar successes.
Using this book as a base point, and providing consistent training and attention, you should find it will leave you with the best companion you can ask for.

Smart puppy,

This book stresses that labs are foodies and will work and learn nicely for good treats. I found Purina One dog biscuits to match its Purina One food line so that my labbie puppy gets nice nutrition while mastering her lessons. I am getting nice training results by following the directions in this book. Do exactly what is outlined and don't let up. I am a first time puppy owner and all is well!

Pretty good book,
This review is from: Training Your Labrador Retriever (Training Your Dog) (Paperback)
I liked the way this book communicates. well written.
It actually explains how to train the dog by giving examples and steps. I tried some items and have seen them to work. A good amount of the tips I already knew about and follow out of instinct. So it is not totally impressive but surely it puts thoughts in a structured context and refreshes old concepts. Training is not only about when to sit and when to fetch, it is about being able to communicate with your poochie friend. If you cannot communicate, then, you cant train (not predictable results for sure) the poochie. This book gets to the basics of what actually is being communicated by each (a lot if not all) of general behaviours we go through with our Labs. All in All, a really good Beginer's book to training. cheers Ranjith |
