From the Inside Flap

(back cover)
Furry, cuddly, and bursting with energy, lovable ferrets can be a handful for inexperienced owners. This book describes how you can start effective training at any time, whether you adopt an adult ferret or purchase a baby kit. The authors provide instruction on training methods that really work, with tips on protecting your ferret from household hazards, as well as protecting carpets and houseplants from a ferret's natural tendency to claw and dig. New in this edition is a chapter on clicker training, an up-to-date and effective way for teaching your pet new behaviors. Also new is information on training pets that have special needs--hearing-impaired and sight-impaired animals.

This is absolutely THE BEST ferret book I have ever seen. It is a wonderful training guide and tells you exactly how to live with a pet ferret on a day-to-day basis. Not only do you get practical advice on litter training, handling, walking your ferret on a leash, food and housing, etc, there are great sections that give you step-by-step information on training techniques. I like the chapter on teaching your ferret to come when he's called by using a squeaky toy. The authors tell you exactly how to go about this, step by step. And it works! The chapter on traveling with your ferret is wonderful-- all the things you would never think about are covered. Best of all, the chapter on Ferret Proofing your house or apartment is a life saver for ferrets. You have to read it! As an added bonus, there are about 80 colored photos that range from those cute shots we ferret owners expect, to details that show you what to do in each chapter. If you're a first time ferret owner, YOU NEED THIS BOOK. If you're an experienced owner, it's still great to have-- you might find a number of things that you hadn't thought about before. As I said before, this is THE BEST ferret book I've ever seen for telling an owner how to live with their pet.

Training Your Pet Ferret is the only book I have read that really does go in depth about how to train your ferret. It is filled with useful tips and advice on how to raise a better pet. Each page in the book has information that you can use. I have used many of the tips in this book and they all have seemed to work out perfectly for me. I am very satisifed with this book. As it says in the authors note, this is not a general care guide. This is a training guide. The only thing that I thought was bad about this book is the ferret pictures. The ferrets pictured in this book always look sad and unhappy. That is the only drawback, other than that, this is a perfect book for a new ferret owner or a ferret owner that has owned ferrets for many years.

My ferrets are either too smart or too stupid to be trained. The pictures were cute, but I couldn't find anything in it that I didn't already know from Ferrets for Dummies or Modern Ferret magazine. I read it once and gave it to the local humane society's library.

This isn't the best book out there for ferret information, but it does have some interesting tidbits in it and a bunch of cute pictures. I haven't been able to successfully use many of the methods talked about in the book with my ferrets, but it's possible they work for someone else. Every ferret is different! I give it four stars because some of the information is good, and the pictures are adorable. For the price, I can't complain. :)

Great book even for me. 20 years ago I owned many & operated a "half-way" house for them. Taking in unwanted ferrets, caring for them, then placing them in approiate homes. But having taken in mostly adults, I have little experience raising kits. This book could scare off potential owners because it's very detailed (almost too much), but if it does then those are the ones that shouldn't own a ferret to begin with. They are a true joy, but a lot of work!

I bought this book and found it extremely helpful. I don't know where the reviewer from Toronto was coming from in the Oct.25, 1999 review! The plastic taped to the carpet worked wonders with my ferrets! Just because one ferret rips tape to get under the plastic mat doesn't mean every ferret will. Mine didn't. The great thing about this book is that it gives lots of options to try. The authors take into consideration that not all ferrets act the same...and that's why I love this book. The pictures are the best. I found the advice very practical and helpful. This book is much better than any other ferret book out there.

One of the best written books I'v read that deal with training ferrets and what to expect when you think you've you had it all figured out. This books tells of dangers that could happen, how to remedy the situation.Beautiful pictures and useful addresses of ferret organizations, I truly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone thinking of purchasing a ferret and wanted to do some research.

At my pet store I influence the customers to buy this book. It gives the best information and how-to-training tips. There is first-hand information that other books don't give. For my pet ferret (Ernie) I used many tips such as toe biting and nail clipping. If you've got a ferret, you've gotta have this book!
