I have owned pet rats for quite a long time, but never considered training them. When I got my newest rat, I ordered this book on-line with high hopes. After reading the book cover to cover I was bitterly disappointed to see that it had little information on how to train your rat to do anything interesting. This book covers every possible thing one could want to know about caring for pet rats, and for that it is a good book. But to be titled: Training Your Pet Rat, and then almost no info on training, well, I can not recommend this book to anyone interested in learning how to train you pet rat.

BUY this book BEFORE you get rats. Everything you need to know is covered in this book, for beginners. Everything from cages, bedding, toys and much more is explained in a simple and fun way. I understand how some people were disapointed in the training aspect, but honestly I think what you need to know is covered. Training is basic, how far you want to take it is all up to the amount of time you put in.

Wow!!! This book tells you everything you need to know about training your little rattie. I've already taught my "babies" how to stand up, give a high-five, and spin on command!!!

I have had other rodents in the past, (mice, hamsters, gerbils, etc.) but when I got my two new rats, I was ready to train them. I ordered this book before I got them, and I knew how to train. My two female rats now know many tricks that were all in this book. At some websites that I looked at for new tricks, the instructions were not as clear, or detailed as in this book. If you are a new rat ouwner, this is a must-buy!!

This book should be named "Training Your Owner- Guide For Rats." It gives great information for first-time rat owners on almost every subject, including housing, feeding, picking your rat(s), playtime, and training. Most of the information in the training section is pretty basic, but it gives lots of ways to expand on and personalize your rat's training.

THE definitive book on training your rat,
By Miles Johnson (Vancouver) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Training Your Pet Rat (Training Your Pet Series) (Paperback)
If there were a sixth star available for that rare bird, the perfect book, I'd be using it without reservation for this one. The style is engaging and often humorous, suitable for all ages. The photographs are also wonderfully done, showing the rats in all their playfulness and intelligence. It really shows that the authors are dedicated rat-fans. Their ideas for training and playing with your pet rat are very inventive, and they definitely worked on my rats. With the Christmas season coming up, I'd heartily recommend this book as a perfect gift for any rat owner.

I learned so much from this amazing book. Read it and you will learn so much about the rat and how almost "human" they are. They truely are trainable and lovable. I bought the book for my son who is the parent for a big Ratty. The book is great. Buy it!!

While it is a cute book, for anyone familiar with operant conditioning, this book is a disapointment. The care info and ideas on toys can be found in other books and on various internet sites. Probably the one thing that stood out was the clarity of the explanation of the differences between training males and females. There's very little meat on training actual exercises. The training ideas given are pretty standard. There's really nothing on working complex behaviors.

A MUST HAVE for the first time ratty,

I wish I had picked up this book BEFORE I picked up my two bundles of joy. This book lets you know just about everything you need to know BEFORE you think of picking up a ratty, or two, and just about what you need to know right after. It's great to fall back on too! MAHALO to the author's anc contributors!

Not much on Training,
By Shakespeare (Island of Formosa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Training Your Pet Rat (Training Your Pet Series) (Paperback)
This is a decent book to have if you have or are planning to own a pet rat, but the word "training" in the title is a misrepresentation of the book's content. It is more a description of what you can expect from owning a rat along with useful hints on caring for rats. The training content is very thin -- maybe only about 10% of the book and some of the "tricks" are actually just fun things you can do with rats. I was hoping for a book filled with a series of tricks along with detailed instruction on how to condition a rat to perform them. If that is what you are looking for, I would recommend looking elsewhere. If you want the basics, this book is ok. The writing does leave something to be desired -- here is an example: "So you think that hamster habitat is a steal of a deal and cute to boot? Think again! What's homey for Hammy is wrong for Ratty." This tone is continued throughout the text. I don't mean to completely dump on this book. There are some useful bits of information, but on the whole, I didn't learn a whole lot about training.
